Super Mario Bros. Dimensions (Summer Demo)
preview
By: LangtonLion64
It's that time again! This is the third demo of the game I am working on. This demo adds World 4 and World 5, redesigned menus, customisable controls, the medal system, additional cutscenes, and more!

In this game, you can switch between two different "dimensions", where the level's layout and look is different. This can be done on the fly, however there are certain spots on the level where dimension switching is prevented. There are 3 star coins for both dimensions in each level. There are new powerups, such as the Laser Flower and the Super Rocket.

The game currently has 25 main levels, 5 enemy levels, 3 Purple Coin levels and 2 "Polter" levels.
Completion: Demo Genre: Platform
Franchise: Mario

I played most of World 1 and enjoyed the experience, although I saw a few things that need tinkering. For one thing, it's possible to fall off the right-hand edge of the screen in 1-4, and in 1-Fortress, you can't climb ladders while holding the key, so if you accidentally fall down the ladder with the key, you're stuck.

I suggest that like in SMW, you can throw items up in front of a climbable object (like vines or ladders), then immediately press the Run button to pick them up and carry them while you climb. Maybe you can implement that to solve the problems that VinnyVideo had.

I see what you mean about the latter problem, but since keys respawn after dimension-switching (unless you are holding one) you could just recollect the key again, though that would be slightly annoying. I might modify the level design in the next release then.

I am planning for there to be some after-game content to add to the replay value, so a special world is possible for a future release. Glad you like the game.

Hmm, I should've tried that. I was accustomed to SMB2 keys that always stayed in the same place.

This is one of the best fangames I've ever played. Despite that it lacks replay value, I just keep coming back to it over and over again. I can't wait until the final release!

Well it must have some replay value then. XD
Or at least for you.
This game does look fun and I've loved all the other demos, so I'm definitely going to try this out soon! :D

You are able to save the game after completing a boss level, which in the first world is a castle. A menu should pop up with three options.

Unless you mean you've saved the game and tried loading it from the menu, then I'll have to look at the problem.

In the Toad House, when you get an item, you're stuck there forever.

Did the Toad House have chests or several question blocks? If it had blocks, you have to leave by the door on the left, but if it had chests that's a bug...

A 2-player mode is unlikely, but the plumber in green is a possibility...

LangtonLion64 I wish your game is the Number #1
Fan game in MFGG. But i still love SMBD.
I discover world 5 it's looks like a city
and little great Levels in it.

also i wish it has weird DLC in it.

that's all i'm going to say.

I'll have to say, renaming your fangame from Super Mario Bros. 4 probably was for the better.

Indeed it was. I originally titled it that so it would be simple and striking, but I was unaware of how many SMB4s there were on the site already. Dimensions hasn't been used at all from what I know.

It both adds a depth of originality and relieves you from the expectations a sequel to Super Mario Bros. 3 (read: Super Mario World) should rightfully have - I'd say it's a win-win.

It was the Toad House with chests.

There really should be the option to save whenever you want. :/

I have been thinking about that, but it would kinda defeat the point of Game Overs. Especially when Super Mario World, NSMB and SMA4 only let you save after beating a boss. Hmmm...

I agree with Willsaber. After game over is a option,
but my point is when i get game over i start with
world 1. i think the issue is that any saves may
lost progress. even though I realize you are right
about that.

While this game is very good and I have yet to finish and compile a review, I'll cite one minor irritation I had.

When holding the Run button when transitioning to another screen, Mario doesn't count as "running". You have to re-press the button. Just a minor control gripe but Mario games at the very least usually register this kind of thing, so I feel it is warranted in being mentioned.

This is isn't really something I can fix, but I see your point. I think it may just be a thing to do with Game Maker itself - I guess it doesn't register holding a button after changing rooms. It happens with most engine-based Mario games, so I think it's Game Maker.

Also I look forward to that review.

I've submitted my review, it contains a bit more info about some other troubles I've experienced, but otherwise, I'm very impressed! This is very well put together(I REALLY dig the artistic choice and direction of a purely 8-bit game) and I look forward to the final product.

I really like how this game is designed and the game itself is just amazing!

This is just an idea you don't have to do it but it's just an idea what if the world was SNES and when you swapped dimensions it would become NES... idk seems like it would fit really well with this :D

That's a very interesting idea! But it may not fit with this game in particular since the style of the entire game is supposed to be NES. Also, your game is really cool too!

absolutely awesome! i dream to make a game like that, but your game (and my idea as well) looks a bit (or maybe a lot) like Silent Hill Origins and Constantine :P
how about rename that dimension change thingy to "Reality Shift", if you ask me that name of very cool, but ask the people first and see if they like it, you there, yes, you reading this right now, do you like that name?
can i join the project? i you be happy to help make this goes on, and i would be very helpful too!

I've kind of already finished the game. The full version was posted on this site a few days ago. But thanks for asking.
