Super Mario Sunshine 2D - DEMO
preview
By: Aivenstruz_
Welcome to my latest project!
I tried my best at demaking Super Mario Sunshine in 2D, and personally im quite happy with it. Most moves from the original game are still here, with the addition to do that tripple jump combo. And of course the belly dive.
Yoshi isn't very polished, its the first time in my programming history to make a ridable character.

I should mention that 100% the game gives you a pleasant suprise, it starts with "huge", and ends with "watermelon". But you have to find it at the main hub after getting all 10 shines.

There is no story yet, Im not very good with storys.

Please note any bugs, and feedback of all kinds are welcome.

Controls:
A, D for left and right.
S for ducking
SPACE for jumping
(there are a lot of jumping combinations, I cant explain all of them)
FLUDD:
Mouse for aiming
LEFT CLICK: Spray water/Hover
Q: Switch nozzle

Hope you enjoy!

EDIT: I was stupid and accidentally left a test level as the last level. Now its fixed though.
EDIT 2: Revamped the description, it was kinda uniteresting :)
Completion: Demo Genre: Platform
Franchise: Mario

I opened this up, got past the sound credits and Nintendo disclaimer, and I got an orange screen. Is anyone else seeing this?

EDIT: I pressed space, which solved my orange screen problem, but the game itself was incredibly choppy and I couldn't see Mario. My system doesn't seem to be able to handle this :(

I wonder what's your operating system? That would help the creator find the culprit of the problem!

That definetly has something to do with your operating system, exactly why it happens I dont know, but the same thing happens on the computers on my school. It probably has something to do with Game Maker: Studio. I'll do my best to fix this in the final game! :)
EDIT: Just played the last level, I accidentally left a test version of the level making you complete it instantly, I'll update the exe as fast as I can! xD

In case you're wondering, I'm using Windows 8.

Some GM Studio games don't run properly on computers that have integrated graphics cards - like mine. I use Windows 8.1. You can try updating Studio to the latest version and building a new .EXE, although that probably won't fix it.

Also, I just accepted the new version.

Aww, Windows 8 may not be compatible with GM:Studio games all the time, especially if you have integrated graphics card. SMB:Dimensions runs fine on my Windows 8 PC, though.

By the way, did you try setting the compatibility mode to Windows 7 or lower?

That is probably it, sounds like typical Windows 8. Like Jaden said, try starting it in compatibility mode. Thats the best I can do :/

I'm using Windows 8.1 and had the same issues. However, changing from the default graphics card to a 'high performance' one seemingly fixed the issue.

That said, the control scheme is not very good if you don't have a proper controller. Perhaps it'd be great if you could add an option to remap the controls? Because they don't work at all on a keyboard.

I also think you should make things a bit less complicated on the control side/mechanics side in general. For instance, don't switch the hover nozzle back to the spray nozzle after a certain amount of time, just have it lose power for a few seconds. The way you did this in this game means people are gonna be messing up all over the place because Mario's FLUDD mode keeps changing.

Similarly, make entering portals much less complicated. Cause in this game, it seems you have to press W or something to enter a level. Why not just have Mario jump in as normal, like in the original game?

It's a good start, but it needs more work on the controls.

Thanks for the feedback! The controls are a bit weird, I guess I dont notice it anymore after play testing it so mutch, you have to get used to it. The main problem with remapping the keys are that the jumps are sequensed combinations, so "space" is litterally the only button for jumping.
That FLUDD thing is more so you definatly cant abuse the flying, for example, tapping the mouse click makes you fly about 3 times higher, so that was just a way to balance it out, I can fix it though! :)

And the only reason you press "W" to enter is because its a 2D space, and you'd accidentally enter the portal with out it.

But again, remapping is not a bad idea, I just dont know how to code a remapping function xD

EDIT: Did the download counter drop a ton when I updated the submission? Or am I imagining things..

This is the first time I have played a game made with GM Studio. How do you close it without having to go to the task manager?

You press "END" on your keyboard, it's usually next to the "Page Down" key. I should really make it "ESC" though.

Lol, that turning mah man. It's weird adding turning when there's no momentum, but it works alright if you get used to it enough. Maybe if the sprite was the right direction it would feel better. I've been playing it for a good half an hour and the worst thing about this is Fludd glitches out at times. The first time I played it he didn't spawn with me in the first world. You should make Mario and Fludd's head the same object, using the draw event instead of setting it's x and y to Mario's, also make the view wider.

Strange that fludd didn't spawn with you. He should, and it has never happened to me.
Game maker Studio is weird in that way...

I've gotten all four shines at the first hub (or whatever it is called), but I don't know what to do the next hub. Does getting into the next hub involves Yoshi?

Yes, its a nod to the original sunshine. There is a building to the right with a giant pineapple plugging a pipe (the house is next to the beach). Make Yoshi eat the pineapple (Left click for the tounge) and voila!

Thanks! I got eight shine sprites now, but I'm not sure what to do next. I collected one hundred coins in the main hub and the first hub (I've never played the original Super Mario Sunshine), but nothing happens, so what do I do next?

You can revisit the fluddless levels. They will have red coin switches in them. Thats how you get the last two shines! :) (There is no end of demo screen, you instead get a reward)

Yikes! Don't go into the Enter pause screen while on Yoshi, or he'll disappear and you'll have no FLUDD. D: I got completely stuck in Delfino Plaza (or whatever this hub is called) because of it.

Definitely pretty fun for a demo! A surprising amount of content to it. I would like to see some more interactivity with different moves; for example, being able to dive through foes (may be overpowered, though... :P) or having Yoshi's juice do anything. In its current state, things are pretty good though!

I would suggest getting rid of the side somersault entirely, though. Trying to work in skidding when Mario starts and stops on a dime just makes things uncomfortable.

...Also would be nice if Yoshi reappeared after falling in water!
