Super Mario Bros. +
preview
By: SilentDream [E]
A revamped version of the original Super Mario Bros. that I pretty much finished a year ago but was going to add more features and levels, but then I never got around to doing it. This is indeed however a complete remake of SMB and the physics and gameplay are as close to the original as I could get them. There's also a special item for you if you can get all the + coins in level select!
Completion: Full Game Genre: Platform
Franchise: Mario

Couple things I forgot, you need to pause and quit the game instead of just closing it in order for it to save, and there's co-op if you select both Mario and Luigi when you start.

It seems to me that doing something original instead of a straight-up remake would be, well, more original, and thus better. Also, it would feel a bit less... copyright-infringementey. Yes, I know that infringementy isn't a word, but you know what I mean. With original games, though, you're only infringing a trademark, and it seems less likely overall to be sued over, though to be honest, probably approx. 98% of the content on this site is technically illegal.

Excuse me? None of this is illegal. It would only be illegal if these games were being sold for profit.

Nintendo could file a lawsuit, but they'd probably have to send a cease and desist first.

I like this game, it looks so nice, world 3-1 looks absolutely gorgeous! Well done with the graphics, I think some of it is custom right? Nice composition anyway.

I still feel a bit strange to the control, I thought of these differences compared to the NES version:
Jump height when standing still is lower here.
Speed is also lower (I used to outrun the jumping fish back in the days y'know ;)

I think I will get used to that though, I'm glad you put this up, it made me smile.

Don't take this seriously but I don't like using Shift or Ctrl as buttons on a computer game... That doesn't mean I don't like this game.

I'm sorry, but the lag was WAAAY too much for me to handle (I'm using a Windows XP that runs on 1 GB of remaining free space with low RAM -_-), so I quit... But I liked how innovative and original the graphics and title screen/controller screen/map where? D:

I use a crappy old XP and it didn't lag on me...

I used to think so too, before I actually learned about how copyright law and its fair use clause works. Really though, Nintendo could have us shut down if they wanted to, although they probably would have already if they were going to, so I don't think they see us as a threat to their profits, and I think we're pretty safe.

nice game :)
but you should add some extra Mushrooms and Fireflowers at the last levels cause they are too hard. That's the only thing missing from the game

What kind of controller?

^^^A PC gamepad or joystick, there's a huge glitch I'm going to have to fix with the co-op mode though, if P2 grabs the flagpole or the axe at the end of a stage the camera won't follow you and you'll die.

At the "Who's Playing" screen where it says control you can toggle the keyboard and gamepad controls between P1 and P2. You can't use a gamepad on the menus however, only in game, it's kind of stupid I know.

Well, I'm going to have to cope with the Shift and Ctrl button with this game...

How do you set the controller though? I pluged in a N64 controller to my computer and it doesn't respond! What do I do?

I'm not sure what you mean, does your N64 controller work on other PC games?

This game is so awesome, although itīs just a remake. The graphics and sounds/music are so great. The game works fine with my Thrustmaster DigiPad. The animations are also very nice, really great work! I made it to world 7-4, where I forgot the right way. ^^

btw, I found a funny thing. In the underwaterworlds 2-2 and 7-2 you only need to swim to the top of the screen, then always jump so you get really fast and could almost "hopp" through the whole level. :D Thatīs so cool cause I hate the underwaterlevels... :P

I absolutely love the updated graphics, music, and smoother gameplay this adds onto the original Super Mario Bros. This is the way a Mario game should be!

@Super Luigi Fan

I tried to reply to you with a PM but you gotta clean up your message box.

Anyway, only one player can use a gamepad/the keyboard at a time. For example if P1 is set to keyboard P2 is forced to use a gamepad and vice versa, this also means that only gamepad1 is detected, you can't use gamepad2. Like I said before, this game was kind of a scrapped project and most it was completed a while ago, so I didn't go back to improve the control options as a result. When I update this and fix some of the glitches I'll try and fix this as well. I wish I could make the controls fully customizable but I just can't do it at this point as there's just too much code I would have to change around.

I've seen at least one other SMB1 remake here, but this one really grabs my interest! I love the presentation - the new sprites are excellent looking, especially the Piranha Plants and Bowser, though given how fluid and lush they are, the reused All-Stars backgrounds feel out-of-place in comparison. The new backgrounds are fantastic, though; I'm particularly enamoured with the 3-3 background, and the idea of using different music for certain stages is nice, although I personally found some of the MIDIs to be a bit clashing.

I'm impressed with the engine - the fact it's a remake allows me to show just how close you got it to the original game, and I most definitely applaud that! The few minor nitpicks do become that little more glaring, mind you - the jumping feels particularly "heavy" for me, as if the gravity is more dense than the NES game, and letting go of the jump button early seems to drop you a bit too quickly for my tastes (this is more noticable in the swimming levels). The springboards seemed to give me a bit of trouble to time correctly, though that's probably just my muscle memory. But aside from those and some minor hitbox changes (the Hammer Bros. seemed unusually easy to stomp, while Bowser's flames' damage boxes seemed to extend a little past their actual sprite), I'd say it's a job well done!

Also I automatically like anything that has a co-op mode. If only the game could be played on the Wii, then I could actually use it. =P

One small complaint:
Hammer Bros!
They were a pain in the ass in both the NES and SNES version, but atleast there they have a consistant throwing arch!
Overall a great remake, super, but the Hammer Bros. keep me from passing 8-3.

I like it a lot, sort of what a SMAS/SMBDX crossover would look like. The only major problem is the lag.

Serious lack of Super Players mode, though. ;)

Hey, I dunno if any of you guys noticed, maybe you guys just don't care about pulling off koopa jumping tricks, but whenever I jump on an enemy, it doesn't bounce me up like it did in the original. I have definitely died by jumping on a flying koopa a couple of time and it not bouncing me. Please fix this.
