Just to let you know, I got a promotion on MFGG's message boards to administrator, and as admin I've started a Game of the Month programme! The winner this month being Castor's Mario vs. the Koopas.

See the topic for more info:
http://mfgg.taloncrossing.com/index.php?showtopic=211913

Obviously, it'll be a monthly thing. And yes, it will be announced in the forums so that I can cover forum news at the same time.

Also worth noting is review drive 8, featuring Super Peach Dreams and Journey of the Hyper Stars. I'll be starting these every month too. Should give you plenty of time to put your review skills into action.

And finally, a site update

Maybe you can put a tag on MVK's description that it won June 2008 Game of the Month

I tried playing Journey of the Hyper Stars just the other day, and it failed to install properly ("File Error" message came up). I suspect that one of the reasons it has no reviews yet is because not only I but many others got this as well.

hyper stars won't work unless you have bass.dll in the same directory as the game

BS should probably point this out in his post (and someone should add it to the game description)

MvK reminds me STRONGLY of Kirby and Legendary Stafi. It was an awesome game!

Congratulations on winning the title!

Sometimes it takes longer to go over things, I have stuff from at least 2 months ago. Just be patient. All I can say

does anyone really submit reviews for the drives anymore? I don't... I would, but I don't know the exact "taste" the staff is looking for, and all my submitted reviews get rejected. And now I'm sick of writing them... although the game of the month thing seems AWESOME!

They have to be relatively longish, not too short, and be more about the game. You really have to try to write good reviews.

Gameplay should have a few paragraphs, and the other sections should have one or two of them.

Good grammar and spelling also helps, but it seems like that isn't much of an issue sometimes...

You should also be completely honest with your review. We don't care if you hate the guy's guts, but if you truly love the game, don't give it a 1/10 just because you hate the guy who made it.

These are all just examples of dos or donts. I don't think you're the bad type, you just need to work a little bit harder.

I've been thinking of submitting a review for one or both games in the current drive. Just haven't gotten around to it.

This place has slowed to a crawl. Thank goodness it isn't dead, but there's like, only one or two updates a month, three if you're lucky.

I agree. MFGG needs more quality control people.

I just need to work a bit harder? aggg... I believe that my problem is that I write TOO MUCH, but then I also get a "not enough detail" (to the staff... I put in extra detail that was probably unnecessary) rejection PM from the staff. and my reviews were longer than anyone elses (when I compared them) so... I just don't know how to write a review on MFGG. takes too much time for me.

Sounds like you're giving general sorts of impressions and stuff, without going into specifics regarding what features of the games you like - specifics such as exactly why you like/dislike the engine, character movement, stage design, level of bugginess, story, boss creativity, fitting together or originality of graphics, music choices, general atmosphere, etc., etc.

Examples should also be given to support your statements of what is good or bad - for example, if a game is annoyingly glitchy, mention some of the primary glitches that annoy you, like "Mario gets stuck to blocks" or "Mario runs too fast and it's impossible to get him to land on small platforms". Definitely stay away from just saying something's "good" or "bad" without giving the reader a good idea of the reasoning process that led to that judgment.
