Fan characters are not funny. Nor are huge credit tags with "comics". They waste space, don't look good and are and pointless, and they don't make you look cool. Please stop putting them into all your sprite sheets.

Also, asking for credit for rips is like asking for money for pirated software. Asking for credit for custom made sprites is fine.

This is not what should be on a sprite sheet:

(PS. I didn't rip that, Raccoon Sam did)

This is how a credit tag should look:

Short, simple and to the point.

Anyway, updates:

Sorry, that was incredibly harsh. I mean, come on! Have a heart. You could tell them to please stop, but "with stupid "comics". They waste space, look terrible and are stupid and pointless," Is a little too much, I think.

I'm happy my addition was shown at the same time as this sprite credit notice. The "give credit or die" comics ARE pretty annoying.

Although the previous credit tag said "Custom" Tanooki Mario made by Char, I changed it to ripped to avoid confusion/misunderstanding. And I apologize about the harsh tone, I modified the entry a bit.

Small, unobtrusive tags with the submitter's name are sometimes even helpful. But we could all live without the (rarely funny) comics that appear so much.

You lost me. o.o

I was talking about the fact that you said it's wrong to ask for credit, but in the condensed tag thingy, you said "give credit".

It doesn't say to give credit, it simply says that Char ripped it, thus giving the user the option of crediting him.

He modified it, but if it included that original one, I'd be completely fine with it - it wouldn't even be incredibly harsh, and could very well actually be an under statement.

People: It's not harsh. Char is right. The comics are annoying, and a waste of space. Also, if there's empty space on a sheet, leave it empty. Don't write EMPTY SPACE in huge text.

...BUT I personally don't see a problem crediting rippers if there's absolutely no money or favors involved. It's nothing like "asking for money for pirated software." I'm sure a more accurate but equally clever and effective analogy can be thought of. It does take work to rip them, and everyone knows (or should know) they belong to Nintendo.

However, I think the right thing to do is say that no credit is required, or say nothing about credit at all if you submit a sprite sheet. When making a fan-game, I always credit the company and the person who rips it unless they say "no credit wanted" or something similar.

But then I realised, it'd confuse people in the context of this article, so I just changed it to "Tanooki Mario ripped by Char."

Crediting rippers is completely fine, and I don't have a problem with it. I always credit rippers. What I mean is, you can't really make a big deal out of it if you ripped sprites and no one credited you for it. Its not your creation so you have no right to ask for credit.

Hallelujah! I normally delete that text when I download a sheet because I honestly don't care about a little empty space. Especially in rips. The point I do care is when the annoying text is there.

if you avoid empty space, there'll not be a reason to have any "Empty Space!!!" tags. Of course I'm not saying clobber the sheet up so much that there's literally no space between each sprite but you should try to keep it compact.

Sometimes, you cannot avoid empty space, though, no matter how well you organize it. But I still think it's no excuse to put a "EMPTY SPACE!! XD" words on that spot impossible to fill in

Yes. Do you know how many sprite sheets on MFGG that have been accepted by Quality Control, but have failed the qualifications for being accepted?

Do you know how many? Exact numbers in a website with an insane amount of submissions isn't exactly my forte, but it might not be yours either.

But anyways, you still seem to be ignoring my sentence, so I recommend we both silence this silly... argument? Not exactly sure what it is.

Like I said, keep it compact. In fact, like you said, sometimes it's not possible to avoid empty space - then use it innovatively! Instead of wasting a few extra pixels for a tag put your tag in the empty space instead.

the rules are the rules,
the rules are subject to change at any time without notice, (you should be happy he is saying something)
the MFGG has this right!
and if you all don't like it, you can stop submitting!
that is YOU'RE right!

if I submit something, and its rejected because of THAT, its simple enough, I change it, remove/change the problem area, then resubmit.
if its still a problem, then I would ask around the forums,
"what am i doing wrong?"
simple, you see?

Oh yeah, I went to investigate and never did quite get back to the question.

I am going for no. While they are in a Mario-related game, they're for a separate entity that doesn't need to be related to Mario - it's the same reason we wouldn't accept the Square character sprites from Mario Hoops.
