Hate to spoil the recent update, but game downloads will be offline until December 1st due to a bandwidth shortage. We'll be working to try and avoid this in the future.

How much bandwidth do you get monthly anyway?

This sucks. I finally got into MFGG, and now we can't get into any of the games! Oh well, I could just make sprite comics all day...

The popularity of Mario fangaming as well as this site seems to have skyrocketed recently, so what looked like more than enough bandwidth a year ago ... kinda caught us off-guard.

Yikes.

Well, we got 5/6 into the month before that happened, so at least you weren't off by much.

It's far from a disaster, really, when you consider that sprite submissions are still fully available for viewing.

Idea: Make it so you need to login to download. And make email validation like the forums. That way less people are just downloading.

There haven't been that much new games that would've been a must download, to be honest. There have been quite a lot of demos and otherwise short games.

That wouldn't solve anything.

They'd just sign up, validate by e-mail, and start downloading.

Plus they'd make comments.

Wouldn't that add to bandwidth usage? Or am I just a net-veggie?

One of the reasons people decide they want to join is that they play fangames and see how awesome some of them are. Not letting them play them unless they sign up would probably end up hurting the site's popularity.

Actually, considering the number of children that are underage/not allowed to, it would actually help.

Well this is a bummer. Man, when I first joined the site (not the forums)it was a fine place, then 2.0 came up. Everything went better. I am suprised that this came up.

As long as you don't download them 21479893254 times I don't expect there'll be a huge problem. Besides it gives people something to look forward to ;)

it must be super mario galaxy. Galaxy is released, and the public goes mario-crazy. They start searching for mario gaming resources, and, sooner or later, they find MFGG. The biggest mario fangaming resource around. So, they start downloading.
And keep downloading.
And keep downloading.
And they push the bandwidth through the celing.
So, we have to expand.
and keep expanding.
and keep expanding.
But we cant always keep up, so we have to take drastic measures like this, just so we can keep the bandwidth at minimum requirement to keep the site up.

Actually, you know what I think it is? People are probably doing Google searches for the words "Mario" and "Galaxy", since SMG was released very recently, and guess where they end up?

Actually, Galaxy's release didn't have a drastic impact .. demand just hasn't really dropped off much since August, which it was supposed to do. I suppose you could argue that Galaxy's pending release may have also boosted numbers, but either way the growth was catching up with us.

um... wouldn't it be better if we like banned linking directly to the sprite/game pages? That would save some bandwith, no?

Just wondering, will the updates to the site be on hiatus due to this shortage? I mean, sprites use up bandwith, don't they?
