Author Summary Score
trollol333 Paper Mario GSO is a very enjoyable game, although there is quite a few things with it, its still fun. 8 / 10
MidnaKoopa I went in expecting something short and fairly average. I ended up spending the better half of a day and quite frankly having fun. It's not technically amazing, plenty is "wrong" with it, but I had fun. 6 / 10
Double Agent Luigifan Keep working on it! I know the score may look a bit discouraging, but keep trying, what you have here is the groundwork for a really good game! 3 / 10
SEVA For the me from two or three years ago, which should be the real author of this game, this would seem like magic. But I've gained enough experience since then to see that this is almost a wasted effort. 5 / 10
SuperLeekBros Paper Mario's a tough act to follow. You did a fine job, but the small flaws make it a "fun but not awesome" experience.
I give you 7 Star Points out of 10.
7 / 10
moonrat As Lisa said: Ehh. 5 / 10
EvilYoshiToes Overall, Paper Mario: Great Star Offensive is a very well done RPG, but the lack of storyline, memorable characters, and randomized battles can make this game bland and frustrating. 7 / 10
Shikaternia Although it lacks the creativity, character development, and depth found in the official paper Mario games, The Great Star Offensive is an overall nice RPG worth playing. 7 / 10
vadim I loved it. Knowing how difficult it is to make a game like this makes me appreciate it even more. Well done!
And to those who want to play the game: play with sound on.
10 / 10
McZaky29 A fun Paper Mario fangame that you should try at least once. 7 / 10
Average Score 6.5 / 10

Very well done, congrats!

Awesome.

Video up at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JolmpQ2WCAo , or you could also play it yourself.

Yeah, nice. I love Paper Mario games! But only if they're complete) This one is complete and i love it, too! Yay! Thank you!

Meta Jun 13 2013, 4:42 PM
THE best rpg on MFGG in my opinion!

C-Division Jun 13 2013, 7:25 PM
Watched a little of the walkthrough. Downloading now.

This looks great! It's simplistic and clean from what I've seen.

I actually love seeing other Mario RPG fan games. It's like a competitive driving force for my Mario RPG game. I mean that in the most postive way, of course.

Wow this is a really good RPG! i am gonna do a review on it soon.

It never gets past 1% of the loading bar for me....

that's too bad, this looked like a fun game.

EDIT: nevermind, it loaded. Not sure what happened.

For me, it just keeps being non-responsive for about half a minute and then it loads. Don't know what's up either.

SEVA Jun 18 2013, 4:37 PM
There's a lot of resources to load, that's what it's doing at the beginning.

superpikachu999 Jun 18 2013, 9:00 PM
Hard To Block etc

BossTeam Jun 18 2013, 9:25 PM
SEVA is right. Its just loading stuff, not getting unresponsive. Well I know another game that take a looooong time to load (because it has got many many things in it) which is on yoyogames. And i'm ok with it

Trojo65412 Jun 18 2013, 11:12 PM
This looks like a great game...very unique.

This Game looks good

This is one of the best Paper Mario-inspired fangames I've seen, although Mario's sprite looks kind of funny. Has anyone advanced beyond the Toad at the ruins?

Double Agent Luigifan Jun 19 2013, 3:08 PM
No story?
Why the heck are there jumping Marios? EXPLAIN, GAME!

Have you even tried playing the game?

behind Jun 19 2013, 8:16 PM
I played it. Not bad, I guess. Though the battles have almost no variety or uniqueness at all. It's like every battle you fight three goombas until you find some obscure, unexplained 8-bit Mario and then fight 2 goombas and the 8-bit mario. And some battles are unavoidable. Got really boring after a while.

SEVA Jun 19 2013, 8:54 PM
You can block like in the official game, it makes battles much easier.

I'll submit a review at some point.

Why do I get the feeling people are making it harder for themselves? For goodness' sake, figure out how to block, and use as many special attacks as you can. That's what FP is for. It will make random battles both shorter AND more interesting. And if you think regular enemy battles are boring, unavoidable battles are bad, and long sections between bosses or scenes are unnecessary, I don't suggest making friends with any Final Fantasy fans. Or fans of any other similar RPG, for that matter.
And would you PLEASE get through at least half of the game before making a comment like Wiiboy4ever's there.

SEVA, your game maybe great and all, but you got to calm down, a fan game is never perfect, its gonna have some flaws here and there, you just got to respect that bro.

I agree with this comment. You tend to get rather defensive when people offer constructive criticism.

Instead of making excuses, use the criticism to improve your games and create better ones in the future. :D

Well, I'm sorry, I won't make anymore comments on this, I'll be quiet.

You don't have to be quiet, but don't fight with people who point out flaws, because most of them are doing it so that you can improve in those areas for any future game you make.
Anyways, from the YouTube video and screen shots I can tell this game is definitely worth trying. I'll try it as soon as I can and I hope to get a review in ;)

SEVA Jun 21 2013, 8:21 PM
I'm not fighting constructive criticism at all, I do see many flaws with this game myself.

Yeah, or you could always just, I dunno, make the game a little more fun the FIRST half of the game?
Quote (SEVA on Jun 21 2013, 8:21 PM)
I just get angered when I see something like "Got really boring after a while." You could at least have put it more nicely or something...
What do you want me to say?
That it got fun after a while?
Look, I'm not trying to insult you or your game and if I seemed like it then I apologize. I'm just saying that after fighting so many of the same enemies so many times without any depth or creativity is bland. Just spice it up a bit.

Also, saying something is boring is not necessarily giving destructive criticism.

SEVA Jun 22 2013, 8:07 AM
Sorry if I sounded overly defensive earlier.

Double Agent Luigifan Jun 22 2013, 3:25 PM
We do not need to play your game. Take the criticism. You'll need it. It is not our game. We do not need to tell you every little detail to put into the game. The battles consist of three enemies, which beat you up. This game is way too difficult, especially at the beginning.

SEVA Jun 22 2013, 3:36 PM
Stop it already, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, you don't need to play my game, I know that. Nor do you need to comment on it. I'm taking the criticism. I know I'll need it. It's my game. If you don't like it, don't play it.

Just try to understand that when people post negative things, they (usually, and hopefully) are trying to HELP you in the long run. Use what they say to improve and make your games better! Don't get upset, like someone else said before, noone or thing is going to be perfect; we're all human, right? Just try to make the best of it. This game has shown some potential to be something great, so expand upon that.

Also, you're always welcome to join the message board and ask questions and communicate in the Developer Discussion forum. People there will try to help you become a better programmer if you have a good attitude about it.

Also, I submitted a review.

Puddin Fangaming Jun 26 2013, 3:36 PM
Interesting game, fun concept, fantastic presentation! It's so great to see a developer willing to stray away from the cookie cutter standard MFGG has set these recent years. My only problem (and it's a big one) is the grinding. It gets a tad boring fighting the same enemies over and over again. Less enemies and more EXP would fix this. Additionally a tutorial character for action commands early in the game.

Also why is everyone still at SEVA's throat after he apologized and said he was willing to take criticism? IMO it's in best practice to criticize a developer's game, not a developer's behavior (especially since he did apologize.) Leave the poor guy alone. @SEVA: Please don't get discouraged. I'd love to see more projects from you in the future.

I agree. Wiiboy honestly has no clue how to review effectively. This game does NOT deserve a 3/10.

Anyways, I don't want to start a whole argument on SEVA's page, so lets try to drop it here.
Also, I found that in the area after killing the big goomba in chapter 1, there is a chasm that you are forced to fall down in order to cross to the other side. Maybe I'm not jumping far enough...
Either way, maybe you should check that out and maybe you could make a minor update to the game, despite what you said about never updating it. Just a suggestion. I don't think it is such a drastic flaw, though, even if it is impossible to cross without the loss of 1 HP (unless the player has only 1 HP and is trying to get back to the health box).

No one is at his throat at all, and notice how most people here are giving him some kind of constructive criticism or trying to help him, at least, in the long run. It is (or was, hopefully) his attitude. Saying "just stop it" when people are genuinely trying to help you isn't really the most appropriate way to respond.
I DO get that he apologized though, and I forgave him.

Did you read the review? Maybe I rated it low for a reason. As a reviewer (and I'll say this again below) I'm always accepting feedback in the review comments to become a better one myself.

Because you feel that this game doesn't deserve something I gave it, that means that I cannot review effectively?
You know, instead of criticizing my so called ineffective reviewing here, you can always provide some feedback on the review itself.

That's subjective. I feel a lot of the comments made after his apology (such as "take the criticism" AFTER he already said he didn't want to fight constructive criticism) were unneeded and it became less about feedback on his game and more about feedback on how he should be receiving feedback. IMO neither side handled this very maturely -- we shouldn't need "STOP IT!" "HEY I WAS JUST TWYING TO HALP!" "I'M SOWWY!" "DAT'S OTAY!" interrupting an MFGG dispute. But again, that's just my opinion. (Apologies for my ridiculous representation of the situation but that's how it appeared to me.)

"Again"? If multiple people are telling you this, then maybe you should consider the possibility your reviews are too harsh.

I can't tell you that you gave the game a lower number than it deserved because the review is supposed to reflect how you, the reviewer, personally feel about the game. But the number for your review doesn't even match the comments you make. 3/10 is a horrible, horrible score. Here in the game's comments you say "Not bad, I guess" yet you give the game a 3/10. Is 3/10 what you consider "not bad I guess"? Like I said, numbers will vary person to person but I'd be greatly intrigued on your criteria for a 10/10 game, a 9/10 game, an 8/10 game, a 7/10 game, and so on. And I can't consider your past reviews a good way for me to determine your criteria because frankly the few high review scores you give are downright confusing to me.

If that's your interpretation of all that then I'm not even sure how to respond because that's just unreasonable...

I will not.
Neither you or EvilYoshiMan's original comments gave me any reasonable or rational feedback. Simply replying "Harsh score" and "ineffective reviewing" are not good comments, considering you didn't actually um...read it judging by said comments, not to mention one of them was an INSULT. As stubborn as it may seem, giving me something more elaborate and helpful instead of just piggybacking off an already uninformative comment has a much better chance in convincing me to see my reviews are "too harsh".
If they really are that harsh, then I apologize sincerely. I will try to be more lenient in the future.

It appears that you want me to blatantly call this game atrocious, or something similar.
To be frank that's kind of what I was attempting to avoid.

Why are they confusing? Did I say bad things about them despite giving them a high score?
Even though a majority of my reviews are rated so-so to less than so-so, I still have lots of "high" rated reviews, depending on what is considered "high".

Anyway we're getting a tad off-topic.
Mason, If you want to continue this please send me a PM or leave some comment(s) on my review(s). I will not be replying here to this particular discussion anymore.
My apologies, mods, and SEVA, and rest of MFGG.

IMO there's absolutely no need to apologize for "getting off topic." Conversations naturally derail; it's not like it was done without a segue. By the way, do you like Cap'n Crunch? As per your request I've replied to your other points via PM.

great game! :D, and btw does anyone know what the final boss song is called?

I have added a review.
Please don't be discouraged that I gave it a 3, the game is just uninteresting, battles are way harder than they should be, and the battle system being very iffy made me decide on this conclusion.
Keep trying! You're a very good programmer! You just need to organize your ideas, get them onto paper, and let people help you!

VinnyVideo Jul 7 2013, 5:52 PM
Just a reminder, everyone: Please keep criticism constructive in tone. This game isn't perfect, but it's good enough to be the June 2013 Game of the Month. SEVA, please make an account on the MFGG forums so I can give you a badge!

Also, I feel silly for getting stuck at the entrance to the ruins when it's pretty easy to figure out how to obtain the key...
