Mario Kart: Speed Strife
preview
By: DJ Coco [E] [W]
Welcome, MFGG! The secret-mongering has finally come to an end. Many of you knew I was working on my Mario Kart fangame but nothing apart from a few menu screens have been shown yet. But now the game is complete and ready for release. Start your engines and get racing in this new game of mine! I hope you enjoy this game as much as I enjoyed making it.

The game features 12 characters, 8 of which are playable from the start. There are 16 tracks split up into four cups. If you get a trophy in one of the cups while playing in Grand Prix mode, you will unlock its respective characters. Additional to the Grand Prix mode there is also Time Trial mode where you can try to set up record times on your favorite tracks, as well as Vs Race where you can play with your own rules. You can customize speed class, CPU difficulty, which items appear, and more.
Completion: Full Game Genre: Other
Franchise: Mario

littlelum This game is well designed, but the heavy lag kills a lot of the fun. 7 / 10
TheNobleBARRY Overall a very good mario kart game and you should play if you got an ok computer! 9 / 10
RoundCircleandSphere314628 If you aren't blindsided by it's Mario sticker you'll find this game to be as hollow as your soul. "Mario Kart - Speed Strife" - but mostly the strife. 3 / 10
tylermariofan This game is great but there are a lot of problems bringing it down. I can overlook them and say that this game deserves the title of best Mario Kart Fangame. Jolly good. 7 / 10
Syaxamaphone It feels more like a tech demo than a fully fleshed out game. There are so many courses but the snail's pace gameplay didn't entice me to want to get past the first few tracks. 4 / 10
EvilYoshiToes Speed Strife is an excellent game with a lot of effort put into it. It does have its flaws, but that doesn't stop it from being enjoyable. 9 / 10
Q-Nova Need some speed? Then start your engines, and download this game now! 8 / 10
Mors Despite not being the biggest fan of DJ Coco's games, I really enjoy this! 8 / 10
VinnyVideo There are definitely some bumps in the road, but Mario Kart: Speed Strife deserves a spot in Victory Lane. 9 / 10
NaluigiRocks This game is great but still, it needs some improvements and maybe you can add a battle mode but other than that I've got nothing. I'm giving you a 9/10. 9 / 10
Birdstick A great fan made Mario Kart , but you won't be coming back for more once you experience every stage. 8 / 10
rustolegrand A homunculus of Mario Kart, lacking in soul, life, or charm, your favorite Mario characters locked in frozen stares scooting around uninspired locales. An unfortunate use of the creator's talent and skill. 5 / 10
bressan Looking for new games in MFGG, I found this. Different from the others Mario Kart Fan Games, Mario Kart: Speed Strife has nice 3D graphics and a good gameplay. It looks like I was playing the Mario Kart DS. But the game have some things I don't like. The courses are too linear, without split paths or shortcuts. The game need more original courses soundtrack.
For me, Mario Kart: Speed Strife is a good game to spend some free time. But there is something this game need: a multiplayer mode.
8 / 10
Vertette Mario Kart Speed Strife is an OK game. Offers little new and the physics take some time to get used to but when you do it's decent fun. 7 / 10
Sr.Wario Everything checks it out. It looks nice. There's a lot to do. It sounds nice.

But it doesn't control well and feels sluggish in the end, which hurts the experience. Still, for the impressive innovations, I'd reccommend a download.
6 / 10
spongyoshi This is a really good Mario Kart game. Maybe not the best but a pretty good one! You can give it a shot if you wanna play some Mario Kart fangames because this game is really well-made seriously! But too bad some flaws harm the game... 7 / 10
Kritter Seeing this posted on the forums, I was quite excited to play it but I just found myself underwhelmed. I wish this was treated more like a lovingly crafted fangame rather than a clone of other Mario Kart's that already exist. It really needed something new to set it apart and above from everything that had come before it, rather than a few new tracks and 1 original character.

DJ Coco isn't in the habit of trying new things and has made that clear, but it doesn't mean I have to accept that when I write my review. As a showcase of what you can achieve, it's an excellent use of 3D and quite well crafted, but in the end it's just a sub-par Mario Kart clone. As DJ Coco said, the only up side is that it's free, but for me that isn't enough.

Average Score 7 / 10

67.11 MB? I thought the main site only accepts games that are lower than 50 MB.

The only thing you could do is making the Karts faster and the drifting slower.

Good job on this! The drifting seems fine to me. But I have to ask you, how could you not find a fitting engine sound for a flippin >CAR< game!? You could have used anything from an actual car to an 8 bit puttering sound, you have to have something! Its especially weird before the music starts, total silence.

Basically, Its weirder to have nothing than to have something.

You need to start using subfolders, Coco. Players really only care about the .exe file.

It's a GameMaker: Studio generated zip file. I have no control over it.

Studio doesn't let people use subfolders at all, even for music or spritesheets?

These custom controls are a nightmare. I appreciate that you included them, but they aren't designed well. There needs to be a "cancel" button or a "save" button or something, because I can't exit the menu no matter what button I press, and it never saves. Not to mention it doesn't explain which button in the menu does what. Even if "brake = go back" is intuitive, it should explain it because it's a PC game.

Also, the game somehow remembers the settings even if I delete everything from the directory and re-download the files. Why is this? Why can't I just delete the data.win and start over? This is frustrating. :(

I can't start playing until I get help with this. Not sure what I did wrong, but it's broken for me.

Delete the file "MKSS Key Config.cfg" in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Project_MK

DJ Coco, I have to talk about your game.
I'm always being a fan on Mario Kart, so
I was just wondering can you make a downloadable
content in this game for the further future.

Maybe you can put GCN Rainbow Road or Battle Mode
you can even put GCN Cookie Land.

If you wanted to put these in the Mario Kart Speed fangame,I think everyone it's gonna love this game.

That's all I have to say.
P.S. Your game deserves a RANK: S Perfect!

I'm currently playing through it.

I really am amazed by the whole 3D aspect of it (in Game Maker no less!) and how well it replicates actual Mario Kart!
What I would absolutely love, though, is if you add your own dose of originality to it (Say, courses that aren't based on previously existing Mario Kart tracks, or even your own items) :P

Honestly, I may be really late to this party, but, I have to say this. The drifting is awful. I cannot use it. Sharp turns are just too difficult to round in this game. When you drift, you should have some sideways movement as well as forward movement. But in here, it just acts as a very sharp turn. And this alone wouldn't be a problem, except that the drifting is also WAAAY too fast. Whenever I use it, I veer off course and into the bottom three. This absolutely killed the game for me, and that sucks because there aren't very many 3D fan games out there and this one has plenty of potential.
