General Commentary and Game Overview
Super Mario Bros. DDX is, as the title may suggest, a SMB clone with added extras. SMB DX was officially released by Nintendo for the Game Boy Colour back in 1999 with new features and minigames, so obviously "DDX" should go even further into adding features into the game? But can it be pulled off?

Pros Fantastic gameplay, feels like the classic game, new features are amazing to say the least.

Cons Movement may be difficult for some players to grasp.

Impressions
Gameplay
9 / 10
The game is one of Guinea/G WorX's first games to incorparate the "All Mario Engine". Those who have visited the forums for a while, will know that Guinea's AME is one of the best Mario engines around, and can be altered to fit pretty much any Mario game. SMBDDX plays brilliantly, as expected, and also incorparates various other features from newer games (Giant Mario from NSMB for instance), each being scripted to perfection. However, SMB wasn't the easiest of Mario games to control, as Mario/Luigi's decelleration means he'll slip about a bit. This is nothing to really worry about though.

Graphics
8 / 10
Pretty much everything in the game is edited from the original SMB. The NES graphics have been updated so that they accomodate more colours, and therefore look much better. Some of the backgrounds are from the SNES SMAS version of SMB, and also fit in incredibly well. The NES edits look nice, however many pixel artists like myself may critisize various parts as being 'pillow shaded', which is frowned upon by the majority of the spriting community as being too basic, and unrealistic. Again, it's not a big problem here as it fits the style, but it's unfortunatly not perfect.

Sound
7 / 10
General Mario MIDIs here. Unfortunatly this is probably the worst part of the game, which is sad considering the rest is so great. However, saying that, there aren't that many SMB MIDIs that could be used to mimic the SMB musics, so it's not all his fault.

Replay
7 / 10
Demos don't really have much of a replay value in most cases, however there is at least one bonus stage, and a secret area to be found, and the ability to play as either Mario or Luigi, so you're bound to play at least twice.

Final Words
8 / 10
SMBDDX shows that SMB clones don't have to be exactly the same as the NES classic in order for them to work well. Definately worth the download.
