Gameplay

The game starts out with a play game or read instructions menu. Well...alright, I don't really see why you wouldn't put that in game but okay... After 7 more screens to click through the intro begins. But to my sweet, sweet relief the intro starts to play. It's nicely put together with some extra details, I’m starting to enjoy this game. So it ends and I find a title screen which also takes a while to get it's act over. Then finally, I'm at the menu. It took me 8 scenes to get to the menu. 8 DIFFERENT SCENES. I'm sorry, folks but I find that waaaay too many. I journey back to the main menu and click New Game. Nice name entry, which is a nice touch to load files like that. So I now am at the world screen. Time to actually start playing some 10 mins after I began. I swear this things get more like actual computer games every day. So I start the first level ending up somehow in a forest. I thought I was in a castle, or looked like it in the intro. Anyway, the level is very well put together with nice effects like fog and leafs blowing around here and there. So now I get to try out the engine, the soul of the game, the heart of the programming, the love of the...player. First thing I notice is having to hold control to run which, I'll admit isn't too big of a deal but got old after awhile. I also notice I can double jump and then triple jump. Which was pretty good but honestly I started to feel overwhelmed by moves already. I like to stick to plain old one jumps or two max. Anyway, then I came to my first raised platform and decided to see what these jumps could do. As soon as I double jumped I hit the side of the platform and went flying off it. Hmmm...this must be that wall jump it was talking about. I try again. No luck. I ran up the hill and did a plain old jump to continue. Shortly afterwards I ran into a check point after seeing level secrets. I continued on mostly seeing the same things but came to a path going straight up like I once saw in Super Smash Bros. So I figured out pretty fast I was going to need that wall jump. It took awhile to figure out but I got the hang of it. On to level two. Somehow I ended up in a graveyard after being in a forest. I quickly found my way down a pipe and found a carrot which game me bunny powers like in Super Mario Land 2. So I tried it out, worked as clean as a whistle. Then something jumped out of a pipe at me and I lost my bunny powers which sent me sailing into a pit. First death of the game was not a pretty one. I restarted and decided not to go into the pit this time. But at the end of the road of the same tombstone over and over I found myself in it again. Only this time when I jumped to some ledge below that I had no possible way of seeing I missed, which didn't surprise me and died. Personally I find that more of an annoying level design then a challenging one. After clearing that level I came to a Ghost House just like in SMW. I'll tell you this was the hardest ghost house I've ever seen. The springs move when you hit their side often resulting in wedged in a wall where you can't get them back out which ends up making it so you can't go on. I die. It seems to start up but no, it's a Game Over. By this time I wasn't very happy so I started to press buttons to move on. Nope, I had to wait a good 20 seconds before finally restarting. But oh no, it doesn't bring you to the title screen. No. It brings you back to the intros, all 8 of them. By the time I've loaded the game again and gotten to the level I still couldn't figure out what to do, several days later I found out and was happily going down the exit pipe. But alas, what is this? A boss battle? Interesting. From the start I notice that there is a spring board. Did I forget to mention how I hate the spring boards in this game? I only have one heart piece left and I try to jump but hit Boo losing it. Game over for me. Wonderful. I get back to the level with 2 lives left because of a part where you HAVE to triple jump. So I actually try to move the spring board but can't because King Boo is so f'ing huge. So I wait it out for him to move. The second he moves he spits out the BIGGEST fire balls I have ever seen. Alas I cannot dodge because it has to have a triple jump which I cannot do at the moment. Finally I can move the spring board. After more attempts I finally land up on the platform. This isn't an easy first boss. I have to actually hurt him about 5-7 times. But he starts moving much faster and start spitting out the invincible fireballs so I die with no more then one hit left. Game over. Many tries later, Level 4 ahoy! I think this is far enough to cover most of the basics of this game.

Graphics
9 / 10
Very nice, with lots of details. I came upon some creatures from SML2 which had some knife in their head. I was easily able to jump them but they...turned into goombas for whatever reason when they flattened out. But the graphics are a big, big plus.

Sound
8 / 10
Great music, very spooky and "Halloweenish". Some samples however sound totally out of place and don't fit with the regular Mario ones.

Replay
7 / 10
The game is set up for a decent amount of replay value, but if you get really frustrated like me, you won't want too.

Final Words
7 / 10
This is a good game. I personally, however, find it a bit over rated. The game looks great, it's graphics are all good. The game has tons of secrets, and surprising cheats. All good there. However, the game has more controls and moves then you'll ever need. Yes, you heard me right. There IS such a thing as too much. The game gets very frustrating at times and really has no continuing story. Please read the full review to understand why I gave it this score.
