Super Mario Bros. Dimensions 2 (Alpha Demo)
preview
By: LangtonLion64
Super Mario Bros. Dimensions 2 is the upcoming sequel to Super Mario Bros. Dimensions. The game will take a different general approach from the previous game. Dimension-switching and Polter are still here, but the graphical style and music are no longer being restricted to an 8-bit aesthetic, and progression will be less linear.

There will be many levels with different missions to complete by finding Energy Drops. The game also aims at making Polter more involved, now that he can use special fruits to give him powers to help Mario out. Powerups such as Laser and Jetpack return from the original game, whilst the new Thorn powerup joins them, with other new powerups still to come.

Luigi is also playable in this demo (who can be switched to in the map pause menu), and some of his powerups now work differently from Mario's, such as floating fireballs and chargeable lasers. 6 missions are playable in this demo.

This is a very good Mario fangame but i feel like i'm being limited to dimension, I mean i should be able to switch at will.

Similar to the first game, there are some spots where you can't switch dimensions because there's a solid or hazardous stationary object (i.e. a wall/floor or spike) in your current position in the alternate dimension.

If I press the Enter button on my keyboard during a level, I can choose to go back to the map. The incredibly glitchy map.

That's true, but in SMB Dimensions 2, you can switch dimensions in a lot of less spots. There even seems to be some spots that don't have a solid or hazardous object in your current position in the alternate dimension, yet you can't switch dimensions.

At first, I felt like if there wasn't anything that would need to be there in the alternate dimension, I wouldn't make it possible, based on how I was planning out a level. But now, I feel like it does make things feel very restrictive.

Maybe in the next version, I'll make sure there are more areas (in the existing levels) that you can switch dimensions in, and I'll also keep it in mind when making new levels.

I haven't played this demo yet, but will the full game have any spoilers for the first game? I'm nowhere near beating it yet.

Gaming Confession: I used to think Polter was a female.

So, you didn't change the dimension swapping mechanics, and even added an animation now?

I'd prefer a more dynamic mechanics, with Mario keeping his speed on swap (Dim is a good example of such game), as I commented on the first game.

Of course, it's your choice to keep it this way. I just hope that this swapping animation won't get in my way while jumping over a pit ;)

But I see improvements too, like coins not appearing again after the switch. Looking forward to the full game. I especially like the Mario64-esque level objectives.

How do I enter a level?

You enter a level by jumping into one of the teleporters and pressing Up.

I haven't been on this for a long time. I loved the first game a lot though. I hope this one will be better.

The original SMBD took the UP three years to finish, so this one would be longer, I suppose.
Anyway I'll wait for the full game, it's too AWESOME XD

To: LangtonLion64:

I was wondering if you are planning to develop Boss Battles that are harder than the first game?

Will Boss Battles have an Easy and Hard version?

Having Boss Battles that revolve around certain powers like the Fire Flower, Lazer Flower, Rocket, Frog Suit, or Bomb abilities would be very fun!

Having various types of Boss Minions would be nice:
Ground Guards were sometimes used wonderfully in the first game.
Missile Guards,
Air Guards,
Anti-Ability Guards,
and Boss Shield Guards
would make the Boss Battles very interesting.

Thanks for your hard work! ^_^
