This is very well done and thorough review, I appreciate all the feedback you've provided.

I've been given conflicting reports on Mario's control; some folks said he controlled well while others had issues with his movement (such as yourself). I have no idea why this is the case, but my guess might be some optimization issues. That, or I might've broke something between the 1.0 and 2.0 versions..

On the subject of the Big Eagle (the Ice Age level boss), this particular boss was based on one from the Ice Age GBA game, and most of his attacks are just ported over from it.

About the options, I was actually planning on adding the features you bring up, but my game software license expired during it's production, which prevented me from properly adding new code. This might also explain some other issues that came up that I couldn't fix.

I'm stuck in the file select. What i'm supposed to do?

You're supposed to press the Run button to select a file. Only select file 1.

I somehow managed to die from going above AND clipping through the semisolid floor in boss 6, and bosses kinda just, have no invincibility period so you can just instantly beat them by jumping/shooting them at the right time (Except for bowser, he was still pretty easy, but harder than the others cause the throwing mechanic)

I have already fixed most of these issues in a upcoming v2.0 update for the game which, unfortunately, I can't release due to my game software license expiring.

Once it's renewed and everything is ironed out the new update will be on the site ASAP. In the mean time y'all can play a demo of the v2.0 version on the forums: https://forums.mfgg.net/thread...1.html#pid31971

Same sentiment, Roo. This threequel was really fun, and I enjoyed every moment of it :D

Though there was a crash when running into a fuzzy (when not attacking them at least, getting dizzy crashed the game), and there was a potential moment for the player to get stuck should they kill a Spindrift in the Tea level.

Apart from those issues, it was an absolute blast!

(if this is the end then that means Waluigi Won't DESTROY A Glass of Milk anytime soon lol)

What a wierd Mario 3 fangame. Seriously, you can run, and you can jump, but you can't run and jump at the same time? So bizarre!

and you can't play with a controller? In game made in 2022?

I'm sorry for the late reply but I'd like to address it now.

This is a bit of a confusing statement. Either you are referring to how Mario controls in mid air (which I have fixed in the upcoming update), or the game isn't responding to the run input while jumping (which is probably not the case).

As for the controller thing, I didn't have access to one in order to debug it, so I left it out. I will try to add it in the aforementioned update however.

Short but fun! If there's one thing I would say, it's that the bosses could really use mercy invincibility. As it stands right now, if you jump on them once you can just keep bouncing on them repeatedly until you win.

Edit: also, does the metal cap (or whatever that grey pickup is) in stage 7 actually do anything? I couldn't tell any changes besides Mario having sparkles around him.

Alright so, the whole "mercy invincibility" thing for the bosses has been coded in already (mostly), and will be included in the next release of the game; the "Pre-Sequel Update", which will be a separate release of the game.

As for the Metal Cap, it is supposed to be the equivalent of the Super Star powerup, thus granting Mario invincibility.

Hey SuperSledgeBro, thanks for the review!

Like with Roo's review, I'm gonna respond to some of your points. I apologise in advance if some of these responses sound odd. A lot of these will be more properly addressed in a upcoming update which fixes these problems.

Before each boss, you have to go through a level. At first, I viewed those as filler to extend the game instead of going straight to the main point.

Doesn't the Mega Man series do this sorta thing, having levels before fighting a boss? Yes, I know there are points where you just fight the bosses but this wasn't based on those points. Plus I thought, where is the fun in just fighting the boss? Wouldn't it be more creative to go through a level based on what media the boss is from?

The level design isn't very imaginative, and I can't say that all of those levels were fun to play.
The camera is not well fit for levels with vertical scrolling, because it's positioned in a way that you can't see much of what's under Mario's feet, even when jumping. Sometimes, you will have to do blind jumps.

Yeah I know, the level design needs a lot of re-working. I think the camera issue will be mitigated once I fix up the level design, removing any blind jumps. Though, it would be nice to know exactly where you think there are blind jumps so I could easily chuck them out.

I particularly found the one with an underground theme, Donkey Kong crocodiles and trampolines to be very repetitive, and got annoyed at level 3, which is a snow level with pits and spike traps. That level has sections with flat ground which makes me think they're meant for running, but if I go too fast, I end up getting killed because of the uncomfortable camera positioning. That was my least favorite.

Huh, I never thought that the DKC level was repetitive. With that said, I recently tried to fix the DKC level to be a bit more interesting, but I guess I'll have to try harder. Though, it's level layout was sorta based off one from a DKC NES bootleg, and maybe the reason this one is lacking was because I didn't add the moving Bee enemies.

As for the Ice level, um, I'm not exactly sure what to do with this feedback. I guess making the straighter areas have a few forgiving moments would help?

Quote (SuperSledgeBro on Aug 28 2022,10:11 AM)
In general, most of these levels have features that you see in every normal beginning of a Mario "world 1". That is, the occasional vertical pipes, straight rows of blocks with free coins and powerups, and easy enemies.

I honestly can't tell if this is supposed to be a bad thing or not. I guess I'm getting the implication that the levels need to be harder and not be very "world 1", as you say?

(The bosses) don't have more than 3 points of health and there is no cooldown when you stomp them. With that, you can kill them in 3 seconds. In fact, if you have a powerup, you can cheat and kill the boss before it even becomes active!

The bosses having 3 points of health was done because that was done in the original Super Mario Bros. 3, as well as the SMB3 Mix ROM hack, which has various new bosses and most (if not all) of them have 3 points of health.

As for the cool down and cheating, this is something I've recently implemented (fixed in the case of cheating) in a forum post, as other people had brought this up before, especially Roo in his review.

I'm going to address one problem that I had with the "giant" boss: the hitboxes for its hands seem to be a little bigger than they should. Mario gets damaged by barely touching them.

I plan to fix this soon.

I encountered several little bugs in a casual gameplay. The good part is that none of those bugs are complex or game-breaking:
- One time, the metal cap theme did not stop after the power had worn out.
- Kicking a Koopa shell inside a wall will get that shell stuck there.
- Enemies die when they touch a Koopa shell, even if that shell is stationary.
- Bosses can be killed before becoming active.
- Items carried by Mario have an odd turning animation.
- It's very hard to jump out of water, especially as Rabbit Mario. There isn't a lot of thrust when he comes out of the water, so it feels like trying to get out of quicksand. Not to mention the countless splash animations that are rendered when I mash the jump button.

Thank you for finding and supplying these glitches, it'll make the future release of this a whole lot better, even if these aren't game-breaking ones.

The special collectibles add an extra challenge when playing the levels, but I didn't see if those collectibles reward anything.

The special collectibles don't reward anything at the moment. In the future release I was planning on making the collectibles do something after you beat the game, like making you play as another character like Luigi or something.

Some of the custom graphics for enemies and bosses are very cheaply made, but that's not a bad thing because this is a weird game with weird things sticking out against Mario. Looks aren't the focus.

I know you said that some of the custom graphics looking wonky/cheap isn't a bad thing, and that, yes, looks aren't the focus, but this is something I also plan on updating since admittingly I was kinda rushing on the graphical side of the game when making it.

Thanks for the review Roo, I really appreciate it :D

Really liked how you thought it was a solid game. Not sure what the Joker comments about..

I'm going to respond to a few points in this review so I can collect feedback for the game's updated release:

>The engine used is juuuust slightly wonky enough to make playing the game a real pain sometimes, especially because of how unpredictable the acceleration is.

That's weird, I'm getting reports that the engine is either accurate or not accurate from 3 different folks who played it? What is going on here?

>Most of the bosses are a whole lot easier than the levels before them due to having basically no invincibility frames. You can effortlessly jump almost all of them to death without breaking a sweat.

You know, it either never occurred to me or I may have forgotten that bosses needed invincibility frames. With that said, I will fix this in the updated release.

>There are also a lot of little bugs in the game, and while they don't ruin the game, they do make it a bit annoying to play.

Can I hear exactly what those "little bugs" were? Because that information would be really useful for the updated release.

Reviewed it. One thing I did forget to mention is that if you get a checkpoint from one level, die, and go to another level, it acts as if you got the checkpoint from THAT level.

Also, what is the stuff in level 8 from? I thought it was an Action 52 stage or something at first, but probably not.

Thanks for reviewing it Roo, I'm interested to see what your thoughts were :)

Though, that's odd, I thought I'd fixed that bug? If your review has some other bugs/oddities that are reported I will release an updated version fixing them.

Also, level 8 is supposed to be based off Disney's MMO RPG "Toontown".

I'd like to point out that not every level is necessary to beat -- you just have to get the key from each world, where they're guarded by some levels but not all of them. You don't even need to beat all the levels required, as there are clouds you can use on the world map to skip a level. You can get these clouds from Toad Houses and maybe Bro battles. Keep in mind that I never used these cloud items in the game, but I used them in SMB3, so I assume they work the same way here.

Also, did you really play the latest version? If you downloaded the game before December 17, maybe you should go download it again, as the game was updated to fix some issues around that time, and see how it does. Just want to make sure.

I must've missed the whole "you don't need to play all the levels to progress" thing due to the difficulty. And yes, I did play the latest version.

So, does that mean that joke games which are like Mario 64: Really Good Edition will no longer be accepted?
