Super Mario Flashback - NCFC 2015 Demo
preview
By: Mors [W]
Super Mario Flashback is a fan game that works to combine the mechanics of 2D and 3D Super Mario titles. It's developed by Mors with music composed by Can of Nothing.

The game features 4 different playable characters, 5 power-ups, 8 worlds based on older Super Mario titles, an interesting minigame and over 35 Power Stars. While Mario controls like in the classic games, he also has access to the moves from his latest adventures, such as wall jump and ground pound.

The latest demo features only 4 power stars and 1 playable character, however later demos will have more Power Stars. To be able to play 4th Power Star, you need to press 'Y' after completing the first 3 stars.

NOTE: If the game gives you an error when it starts add this file to the game's directory: http://www.smflashback.ga/downloads/d3dcompiler_43.zip

This game doesn't support integrated graphics cards, I guess that's why you get the error but I would still like to learn what that error message says. :)

You should include D3DCompiler_43.dll with your game. It seems to fix D3DXCompile failed errors for most people. You can find a copy of this DLL in the %appdata%\GameMaker-Studio folder.

Or, here's an idea, why don't you make a game that we can just download and play without having to go through all this bulls***? You know, like 90% of this site's games?

I'm intrigued. I wanna play it. But I don't wanna do all this crap for a game I may or may not play for five minutes and then never see again. Think in terms of player convenience.

Like I said, I still want to try this game, so for the sake of my review, tell me how to solve this.

I'm really sorry about this. I updated the game's description with this part:
"NOTE: If the game gives you an error when it starts add this file to the game's directory: http://www.smflashback.ga/downloads/d3dcompiler_43.zip "
If it won't work for you, I can't do anything about it.
It's the file Hello mentioned so big thanks to him. And I'm really sorry about the problem.

Well, you can also try to delete smf.ini but I don't think that would work too. Since that never happened on me (or even someone else) before, I don't know to fix this problem.

Huh, There should be. This is weird. Did you extract files? Or maybe you can try to open the game as administrator. If you're not an administrator, you can move the game folder to the desktop too.

Yes I've extracted all the files, but the file is still missing, and it still doesn't work when i open it as administrator.

Mors, you've improved immensely since your last game. Good job, m8.

This is honestly one of the most professional and polished fangames I've ever seen, if not the most.

...But, unfortunately, whenever a shader is active the game slows to a snails pace.

I just played this game. HOLY CRUD, I haven't played a game like this for years. This is probably like one of the most enjoyable experiences for me on MFGG. Insanely good job, words can't describe how miraculous this is. By the way, how do you get the third green star in the first level without dying?

You're certainly welcome, especially for making this insanely amazing game. The site needs more (or 'mor') fangames like this.
The main problem that also brings the game down many points for me is the insane glitcheness. You can literally just find glitching without even trying, but if it was less glitchy, I'd say this game is probably a 7/10 or 8/10.

This always happens when you rush something. :P
I could fix these bugs, but I was lazy and decided to fix them right before NCFC. But then I decided to include the 4th level...

Yeah. One of my favorite glitches is one I found where if you run and turn around, when Mario's in his sliding animation, duck and hold in the direction you were originally running. You will slide pretty fast, and if you hold Control he runs like normal except he's in part of his ducking animation. XD very useful glitch for speedrunners but should probably be fixed.

That one we'd noticed ages ago but kept because we liked it, ahaha. Reminded me of how Mario could moonwalk in Super Mario Bros. by holding both left and right. It serves no real gameplay purpose, though - I'm pretty sure he goes at normal speed when doing the glitch.
If anything, it makes it harder, not only because it limits your control and jump height, but also because it pans the screen as if you were facing the opposite direction you're moving in, making it harder to see things coming again.

I've done some bug testing here and there for the game, so most glitches I should be aware of already (there's one I found just yesterday I really should tell Mors). Still, you probably better should report them in case it's something we don't know!

I have some more glitches I found.
1. If you go slide down one of the tilted hills, you instantly kill a Rex. This might be intentional, but is kinda weird.
2. I love this one. If you once again slide down a tilted hill, if there's a wall next to you, walljump while your in the sliding animation, but make sure to be in the air. You will walljump incredibly high!
3. I like this one as well. If you throw any thing you can hold and catch it in midair, input a ground pound right when you grab it, and don't let go of the ground pound button for the full experience. Suddenly, Mario will be floating it the air, carrying the thing. If you let go of the thing, Mario still does a ground pound. This might be caused by the fact that there's a delay in the air when you ground pound, but I have no idea.

Here are some more things I found using the duck-slide glitch.
If you do the glitch, it's possible to enter a warp pipe if you turn to the side in the correct way and the right time.

Doing this glitch, Mario is in his ducking animation. This means that he can run and walk doing this while being ONE block short! This means you can do this to get under certain Piranha Plants and one block gaps.

Since I was going to rewrite sliding, I didn't beta test (EDIT: I hate this keyboard app) it at all. And these sound like extremely funny glitches. XD
But actually all of these are easy to fix so the next demo won't have them.
