General Commentary and Game Overview
Super Luigi Country hearkens back to an earlier age of fangaming, back when Clickteam products ruled the roost and people cared more about having fun than about trying to attain hyper-realistic mechanics. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Pros + Funny story
+ Unique level concepts
+ Clever mix of old-school gaming genres
+ Humorous voice acting

Cons - Last world feels rushed
- Major-league graphics clashing

Gameplay
7 / 10
Super Luigi Country consists of 20 one-of-a-kind levels, interspersed with some equally zany cutscenes. These levels cross over to multiple genres and refer to several different gaming series, including Donkey Kong Country, Zelda, and even Castlevania. While most levels are platformers, you'll also encounter an overhead level inspired by the original Legend of Zelda. Each level is just a single screen in size, but don't let the brevity fool you - some of them are extremely challenging. If you've never had the pleasure of playing a Waligie games, many levels feel thoroughly Waligie-ish. My main complaint is that the last few levels are actually the easiest in the game - it's clear that by that point, the developer was running out of ideas. Kudos for finishing the game instead of abandoning an interesting project, though.

A couple of levels, especially the backlit spikes level, caused a few crashes on my Windows 8.1 PC. Then again, it's amazing that games made with development software this old will still run at all.

Graphics
5 / 10
OK, the graphics clash fabulously. The game doesn't make any attempt to have a coherent graphical scheme, but at least the developer is fully aware that the graphics clash and embraces it instead of trying to conceal it!

Sound
8 / 10
The MIDI music is dated, of course, but the chosen tracks are pretty good. The voice acting is hilarious.

A greater variety of sound effects wouldn't hurt, though.

Replay
4 / 10
Most of the levels rely on gameplay gimmicks, and once you've figured out how to beat them, some of the charm is lost. I'd be more likely to replay this game for the zany story than for the actual levels.

Final Words
6 / 10
It's like Waligie, except it stars Luigi. Oh yeah, and Cranky Kong. It's definitely a unique experience. I had fun.
