MTA3 - Mario Takes a Three
preview

Mario Takes a Three was a level contest that was held during June of 2019. This is a compilation game that features levels that were submitted to the contest. Can you finish all 24 levels?

STORY:
------

At his castle, staring at the bleak skies of the Dark Land, Bowser was pondering.
"No matter what I do, I can't defeat that plumber! My courses aren't enough to stop him, he always finds a way to clear them. Hmm... Wait for a second! What if I got people who are better than me at designing courses to make courses for me?"
Bowser created a fake contest and it spread around quickly. People all around the world were interested, and within a month several courses were submitted. Bowser's plan seemed flawless. All he had to do now was to find a way to lure Mario into completing those levels. He wrote a letter, inviting him to complete all those courses, and made it seem like it was sent by the Princess.
Help Mario to clear all the obstacle courses and defeat Bowser!

Sweet -- it's finally out! I've been really looking forward to this! I'm downloading it right now! By the way, I really like the story -- it's very clever!

EDIT: I played this game tonight! I did all of the D-Tier levels and two C-Tier levels (I figured that I should start with the worst and save the best for last), and completed all but one. I do want to point out a couple game-breaking bugs I received, however. While I was playing the second level in the C-Tier level (which I haven't beaten yet), I got this error:

Quote

___________________________________________
############################################################################################
FATAL ERROR in
action number 1
of Step Eventobj_qblock
for object obj_physicsparent:

REAL argument is unset
############################################################################################
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
called from - gml_Object_obj_physicsparent_Collision_237 (line 7)

I was just hitting ? Blocks while I was above one of those horizontal Thwomps. Also, in level 2 of the D-Tier level section, I once grabbed a mushroom and the game froze, including the music.

Aside from those glitches, this is pretty enjoyable! I think dividing the levels into tiers is a nice idea -- you can see what makes the bad levels bad and the good levels good. The judge comments are especially helpful for that! The way the D-Tier and C-Tier map screens are done are pleasant surprises! My only complaint here is that the effects, while cool, greatly slow down my computer (Windows 7, if you're wondering), which gets irritating when you die in a level a lot. Maybe add an option to tone down the effects for less-powerful computers? The rest of the game runs VERY smoothly, especially when running in full-screen!

Will play more later on! :)

EDIT 2: Played even more this night! I beaten the rest of the C-Tier levels and some of the B-Tier levels! In level 3 of the B-Tier section (Rooftop Regime), I went through a warp pipe and the game gave me an "Out of memory!" error and then froze. This was after I died in that level a few times. I've also noticed some glitches that are minor, but annoying. That includes falling through those donut platforms that are on rails and getting hurt from stomping on enemies that aren't spiky.

I recently updated the game to fix the memory leak issues (hopefully), but as for the other crash, I've tried to replicate a similar one earlier but I wasn't successful. I will take a look at it again later, same for the slowdown issues.

That's good to hear! So, when the update gets accepted, is it possible to overwrite the files with the updated ones without any save data corruptions? Just want to make sure. By the way, I noticed a minor mistake in one of the sprites earlier, but forgot about it until now -- when Mario is falling while using the Piranha Plant power-up, his left hand is missing a glove!

(Also, I was somehow able to give your comment two likes! When I unliked and then liked it again, it only did it once.)

I just beaten the game! Man, the high-tier levels are so much fun to play through! I think of all the levels I've played, my favorites are Flying Ocean Tower, Sunken Ship, and Flaming Forest Frenzy! The Bowser fight is an unexpected, but cute touch, although it somehow felt a bit anticlimactic. Not exactly sure why, though, it just feels that way. Looking forward to the sequel!

By the way, did you forget about Syaxamaphone's level? I noticed that there's no level marked 9th in the whole game -- I even looked carefully through all map screens!

Also, I'm not sure if the official SMB3 is like this, but it annoys me that you cannot jump off of vines when you have the raccoon powerup.

Of course you're the first one to notice.

He didn't want his level to be included, normally we wouldn't be ok with this but his case was a bit unusual.

As for the wine thing, I fixed that actually but never announced it here, whoops!

Ah, so that's why Syax's level isn't included.

Anyway, I just tried out the update, and I'm really happy with it! I noticed that some of the number ranks have been changed to the proper writing (e.g. "23th" to "23rd"), which I appreciate. However though, I found a new bug. Normally, when you do a memory game and then exit, you should see the memory panel disappear on the map screen. In this update, though, you don't see the panel at all, until you do another level, when you see the panel appear only to vanish properly. You can even just go to another map screen, play a level, and you'll see that panel. Also, there's another bug that I found earlier but forgot to mention: In the Sunken Ship, there's a part where you can knock out a Thwomp by hitting the blocks below it. What's buggy about it is that when the Thwomp leaves the screen, he teleports to right below the ceiling and slides to the right, eventually going through the wall!

I was playing again, and I just found a major bug in Flaming Forest Frenzy -- whenever you get hit in the first section, the screen goes black for a bit. I fell into a pit in that same part, and the game froze with everything black except for the HUD and wouldn't respond, so I had to use the Task Manager (and boy, it sure took a while for the game to close). I'm using Windows 7, by the way.

I'll take a look at it

i also like how the description provides in-universe context for this compilation, lol

Lol I downloading this hoping for a bunch of weird, crazy stuff like the Minecraft level in the thumbnail, then got basically another Hello engine.

Except this doesn't even use Hello Engine? And there are more levels like the one in the thumbnail?

Well it kinda didn't work as it still happened to me, in the same level Q-Nova was playing in fact.
