Somari 2
preview
By: Ryan Silberman [E] [W]
One day, Mario sat around his house, pondering about life; his plumbing business has been down the drain (dur hur), and the princess has been free from Bowser's grasp for a whole day. With nowhere left to turn, Mario looks back upon his short-lived days as Somari the Adventurer during the year 1994. He then shaved his mustache, wore a new set of clothes, and decided to embark on a brand-new adventure with "Somari the Adventurer" as his new identity for real this time.

I started this project in 2013, and then I canceled it after about a year of slacking and lack of motivation and not willing to deal with drawing more levels. In February 2014, I basically replaced it with Dynamite Alex, but as I kept revisiting what I made of Somari 2, I felt like even though the enemy collisions are just a mess and impossible for me to fix, I actually really enjoyed the levels that I created, and every time I played through these, I increasingly felt....actually a bit saddened that I've kept the levels to myself all this time (I don't normally cancel games that I've made significant progress in). So here's what I finished of the game as a full title, complete with five levels, a boss, and a brand-new little ending sequence.
Completion: Full Game Genre: Platform
Franchise: Mario

So I have a question...
Is shift suppose to let you skip levels? Because I just finished the game in 15 seconds

Well, the graphics don't look very promising, truth be told, but I'll give it a shot anyway.

EDIT: Short review (not going to write a full one seeing as I haven't played the full game yet): I'll be blunt here, the graphics look crudely drawn, but the gameplay, while a bit buggy here and there, is actually okay. Aside from the somewhat confusing level design and the fact that bouncing on a spring doesn't always make you go straight upward (you bounce to the left or right depending on which side you hit), Somari controls fine at best. Like I said, I haven't played through the whole game, but I'll finish it whenever I get around to it because it's somewhat appealing. If I had to give it a rating based on what I've played, I'd probably say 5 or 6 out of 10.

I played from the first stage to the cheese level act 2. I couldn't go further because every level has invisible sections. Yeah, there are invisible sections in every level. Some are covered by what at first appears to be just a normal flat terrain, and I was just running through slopes that I couldn't even see.
I hope that's not intentional... I need an answer...

Indeed it isn't intentional. I'm not quite sure what it is that causes the game to do that...And even weirder is that no matter what computer I've played the game on, I don't experience that glitch, yet I know a couple other people out there may have. I don't get it.

Maybe you could try again by exiting the game and loading your file. Hopefully the terrain would be fixed.

I did this because the title screen was made in a different resolution than the game itself, and I didn't want the game to be shown switching from a large window to a much smaller window.

The graphics are crap, The engine is buggy, and the enemy collision is also crap. but it's okay, not great, not bad. Although I don't know why you changed the look of Mario(or Somari like it really matters.) If anything it looks even worse.

Then make the title screen in a different resolution.

I would have, but the graphics for the title screen were already created, and making them smaller would scrunch up the whole look of it. I simply didn't want to do that.

The physics are very good, but the game is rendered difficult to play due to poor level design. The level graphics are rather primitive and unpleasant. I get you want to use custom graphics for the levels, and power to you, but you should really compile and use some sort of a tileset in that case. I also do not understand the purpose of the edited Somari sprites. Is this supposed to be some sort of original character? The original Somari character would work just as well and make more sense.

When I realized I could draw levels and put them in as such, I pretty much ran with it.

Well, this was abandoned two years ago. I only decided to add an ending to it and bring it back from the dead just for fun. I wouldn't expect updates to it.

I actually think this has potential. You should make a sequel to this. Or maybe a spiritual successor. And fix the problems other people pointed out.

Tempting. But I can't say for sure, especially since I dried out on this one.

Jack, I know that game was abandoned two years ago.
But My honest opinion is Somari 2 is poor.
I tried to get pass zone 1 but there one problem..
There Grass glitch is everywhere. I tried to get pass it but I died... This fangame has to be fixed.
Even the levels you just make is terrible. I fell really sad for you. If you make changes to remake Somari 2 try use Game maker pro, Game maker Studios, or other game created software.

I'm really sorry Jack but truth really hurts.
It was my honest opinion.. Sorry :(

Premade, but I made use of its physics in a way in which Somari was actually able to interact with drawn terrain

I can see that you tried, but the graphics are pretty bad and the sound design is abysmal. However, I would like to compliment you on the engine, as although others complained of frequent errors with physics, I found none!

...so you didn't see Somari's slipperiness as a physics error?

Its "Okay"
Not good, nor bad, By the way. From which Open source Sonic Engine did you build this up, Because... it's Slippery as hell, I mean, Don't get me wrong, i Personally use The Super Ring Engine or Sonic MAX for Sonic Fangames (Or in my case, A Bootleg Fangame,Grand Dad to be specific) But its slippery, also try using tilesets instead of drawing it yourself (it looks beter then)
