General Commentary and Game Overview
Super Mario 2D Land is actually a pretty good game! While it lacks a clear sense of originality, I have never seen a more well-done Drageezey clone. There are some pretty unique bits of level design in there, and it encourages you to evaluate risk vs. reward several times. The first level may be a bit too long, and the sudden change of music that you go through from the title screen to the game is a bit... severe. There is a nice variety in level themes (much like it's 3D counterpart). It has it's glitches, but unlike most engine clones, I don't want my thirty minutes back!

Although the Goombas don't move on the title screen which REALLY bugs me.

Pros - Unique level design gimmicks
- Good music
- Drageezey is a sound engine, I guess

Cons - Well, everything is built out of existing elements. And while it really is about as creative as it can get, it feels like a hack rather than a fan-game
- Lackluster graphics

Impressions
Gameplay
7 / 10
The gameplay is good. Lots of great but not overused gimmicks. The physics feel plain, but for once there is a fan-game that brings mario back to his newer-older-dsier form based on either running through a level, or taking it slowly and finding secrets. Honestly, I have not seen a level one this good in a loooong time. Sadly, the game-mechanics don't feel modernized and are pretty much just Super Mario Bros. 3.

Graphics
5 / 10
The graphics are boring. I don't like the color palette, they're overused, pretty default, and don't seem clever at all. There really isn't anything else to say here. It mixes waaaaaay too many Super Mario World sprites with Super Mario Bros. Second to mixing Super Mario Bros. USA in, that's about as bad as it gets.

Sound
6 / 10
The sound is plain and overused. Nothing conflicts, but it's just... boring.

Replay
7 / 10
The game has many secrets, is consistently fun, extra levels, and unlockables. That's pretty good replay for me!

Final Words
8 / 10
The game is really good. If the graphics are updated to Nintendo or Fangaming styles, then it would be great! There is excellent variety in levels, amazing run-through gameplay, and is just really worth your time!

I suggest you to fix your review because Drageezey Engine 7 is not a sound engine. It's everything except levels. This game doesn't have any effort and doesn't deserve that score. The score should be 1 or 2, not 8.

Yeah, as Mors said, Drageezey's engine is basically a complete game that just needs levels, which were are all poorly designed in this game.

Also, I don't want to force my opinion onto you, but... where did you find the "excellent variety in levels" and "amazing run-through gameplay"?

"Unique level design gimmicks?"
"amazing run-through gameplay?"
"excellent variety in levels?"

I can't tell if this review is sarcastic or not...like Mors said, you should probably fix your review.

XD

Well, maybe most of the gimmicks weren't unique, but they were over-all fun.

And run-through gameplay is basically the ability where, assuming your timing is good, you can dash through a level in record time. This is pretty much in all the levels, aside from the vertical one, which was focused on a fun gimmick.

And you have to admit, having grass lands, snow levels, and desert levels so close together is a great variety. Much like, as I said, it's 3D counter-part. I didn't mean variety in gameplay aspects.

You've got to be kidding
There's a lot of other engine-based games on here that are a lot more fun and creative than this.

As far as engine clones go, this is the most creative I've seen. And I've seen a lot (though probably not as many as you).

What? Are you joking? Sorry, but this game is really bad... (sorry, Moonrat...). I know it's you opinion, but someone who hardly knows anything about level design could tell that the levels in this game are completely awful. And all he did was make the levels. He used an engine that supplied him with graphics, sounds, powerups... everything but levels. I just don't understand how you found this game fun.

By the way, this is probably one of the worst clones out there. Not saying it is the worst (because there are some really really bad ones), but it's pretty darn bad. Again, I don't mean to offend you Moonrat. I just think you need to try harder... much much harder.

I am quite astounded by the naivety the reviewer who made this review has. No offense, you will understand the critism on this review when you stay on mfgg a longer time. There is clearly only 1 out of 100 percent effort in this clone. Aside from the levels, there is changed nothin', nada, niente, nichts. I might suggest you to reconsider your thaughts in detail before you write reviews. ;)

Oh yeah, I get that the game is bland in every way but level design. I just find that the level design and the details in the levels are enough to compensate for that.

this is an unique review and very well written better than famous game reviewers on youtube
11/10 amazing sheet

Stop.
Super Mario 2D Land? More like "DragezeeY Engine 7: Poorly Made Levels Edition".
It may be amazing for you if you haven't checked an engine before in your life.
I know that because when I first saw a Hello Engine game (Mushroom Kingdom Fusion was my first)
I thought it was the greatest thing ever. Sure MKF is a good example of engine based games, but
then I looked at some of Hello's games with his engine, and other clones.
If you had played DragezeeY Engine 7 before this, you wouldn't find this amazing.

Trust me, I have played a lot of engine clones. Probably not as many as anyone else here, but still quite a bit. And honestly, this really is the very first I enjoyed. And it is absolutely 100% positively because of the level design.

Sorry, I should respect your opinions but do you really think this game is creative? Ok this game is actually quite creative for a clone but dude, this is a clone! Did you play Super Mario Dimension? Did you play Super Mario Odyssey? Did you play Mario & Luigi's Coin Chaos? Do you really think they're worse than this?

I really can't believe you're serious.

I never said this was better than any of the three games you mentioned. Those three are what fan-gaming should be. But I find the levels in this game capable of carrying the rest, simply because you simply don't find this style of level design around here. Generally in 2D platformer fangames, you'll find level design resembling that of Super Mario Bros. 3 or Super Mario World. But the way the level design was made in this game allows for a totally different playstyle much closer to that of the modern portable Mario games.

I don't understand how you gave it an overall score of 8. And not because of opinions, because in each specific section none were 8s. Overall, if you find the average of your scores it's 6.25.

This is a minor gripe but I wish people would put reasonable scores relevant to the individual sections.

The final score isn't an average of the other ones. It's how good you think the game is. You add up everything, and judge if it's good or bad.

You can't think of a 5/10 as being half of great, you need to think of it as 5 on top of nothing! So adding up, say, 5 on top of nothing and 7 on top of nothing can make a higher score than 7.

This is the second time I saw somebody rating a bad game 7/10 to 10/10. (Say whaaat?!) Seriously, I can't even tell if that's sarcastic or not, and that was rated 2/10 or even 1/10 for poorly-designed levels.

Firstly, I was referring to the level design of a true-to-the-core clone. Secondly, Dimensions was in very early stages when this review was made. Thirdly, I was kind of dumb. XD

In all fairness, this isn't exactly the greatest review. I mean, Jaden had some really unnecessary (and pretty rude) connotations, but SupperMuppet gave some, albeit strong, critiscm that seems valid in a broader light.
