I'm so glad this is finally a thing that exists. Are you going to do All Stars versions of 1 through 3?

I've never been a fan of these kind of sheets, but I have to admit, these are really good! The Super Mario World one looks a little iffy to me (probably just because I'm not a huge fan of that style), but the rest look much better than the originals!

I'm waiting for that SMB3 one to be used in a hundred fan games.

Naw, just kidding these are radical man.

I might do that. I should probably upload the Luigi one first. I just finished it.

That looks nice AwesomeZack. (BTW for the other powerups, I think that's easy to do, unless you're about to make a mega powerup sheet based on that)

"Needlessly complicated"? ....I....I'm at a loss for words....besides, they're his sheets, he can do whatever he wants.

why not try to improve the sprites themselves rather than make the sheets have a bunch of needless junk in them? these sprites are definitely far from perfect (SMB1 in particular is very blobby) and wasting time on making the sheet rather than the sprites themselves "look unique" is a waste of time.

Just because he put unnecessary time into the backgrounds doesn't really mean that he spent any less time on the sprites themselves than he would have.

that's great! but when they detract from the sheet's quality and usability, then that in turn makes the sheet in general worse! it's called criticism, and i am definitely providing it!

No, it's called irrational nitpicking. How are the backgrounds detracting from the quality and usability of the sprites? The backgrounds have absolutely nothing to do with the sprites themselves; they don't affect the sprites in any way, so saying they do is just silly and makes you look like a fool.

the backgrounds make it harder to use the sprites. there's no single background colour, and it makes the sheet unnecessarily large

exactly. it's wasting space. there's no point in it being there. it LITERALLY makes it more difficult to extract the sprites from the sheet and into something like game maker. there's no difference between this and writing something dumb like "xD BLANK SPACE!!!".

The backgrounds don't make extracting the sprites that much harder. There is only one definite color as a background of each sprite. The backgrounds don't invade the squares the sprites are in, so You can easily delete everything around the sprites. Unless it actually creates a real problem, you shouldn't be complaining about it.

The point of a spritesheet is utility. Sheets should be clean and as small as possible to keep file size low, ideally. Adding a bunch of background stuff, while visually pleasing, is nothing but unnecessary junk. Stick to just the sprites themselves next time.

you should. because i'm giving you criticism, which you need, in order to make better sprites. that's generally how it works? need some examples of what criticism does? look at everything i've done in the past year.

Sprite Sheets tend to get treated like pieces of art themselves these days. They have for a long time, actually. In reality, they're an asset used to create art.

It's not a crime to sort your sprites like this, but it makes it that much harder to get from the website to somebody's game that way.

This is what a sprite sheet is supposed to look like:

[ link ]

So you can throw it in a folder, and if you're making your game in C++ or something, you can make your program animate it without having to remove all the needless stuff. With this sheet, there would be some work to do before you could do that.

Yeah, I agree with Mit and the others here. The backgrounds, whether or not they detract from the quality of the sprites themselves, are unnecessary and do make the sheet harder to use and they increase the file size. I think the best way to present a sprite sheet would be to have everything as tight and easy to use as possible, since the backgrounds of the sheet won't be of any use to people anyways, and most people don't want unnecessary space taken up.

Also, you shouldn't get so defensive you know. Criticism is helpful, even if you don't like what you are being told.

It really amazes me how many immature children there are here. You kids may think you're giving constructive criticism, but in reality, all you're doing is nitpicking. Rather than whining about something as simple as backgrounds, why not try actually criticizing the sprites themselves? Just remove the backgrounds yourselves when you use the sprites and stop whining. It's really not that hard.

This isn't nitpicking, this is an attempt to help reformat the sprite sheets. There are no positive effects to adding backgrounds to the sprite sheets.
Even if it isn't "that hard" to remove backgrounds, this takes time away from actually implementing the sprites and making things work.
It's simply unneeded, and it requires editing no matter what with those backgrounds in place.

You people forgot to criticize these submissions because they go above and beyond the usual one color for the background. Its a bit ridiculous to target one (edit: Luigi sheet isn't exempt according to imaginary cake's post) when 8 others do the same thing.

EDIT 2: Okay, mainsite screws up links. Copy the submission ID to your URL.

Um, they don't detract from the actual sprites... Im with NES Boy and Somari64 on this one. Because AwesomeZack made these backgrounds as a supplementary take to show how each variation fits for each of game styles people may want to use them for their own fangames that may or may not also be either using or wanting to use any of the art styles of their choice. However, I will agree that its unneeded because he, as a content creator, does not need to go above and beyond to do just that. The thumbnail does it enough. I just see it as an example of how they fit in with these games' respectful art styles.

Yeah sucks to be you. Look, I understand what you are going for with these backgrounds, but at the end of the day, you have to provide a better argument to your detractors regarding why you put in those extras. Using ad hominem is not the way to do it.

i never said it detracted from the sprites. i said the sheet. it detracts from the usability and therefore quality of the sheet.

and the other sheets are "exempt" because they're older. no point in dragging it out to there. not every sheet gets comments from certain people.
