General Commentary and Game Overview
IT IS A TALE OF EPIC PROPORTIONS! In a time and age of peace, where magical mushrooms have flourished, there existed a beautiful princess, who had kept the world in balance. Every day, she graced the land with her magic, restoring the peoples' hopes and dreams. But, this age of peace would not last long - for lurking in the shadows, there lived an entity of darkness, whose energy stemed from the element of evil, would disrupt the balance set by the princess. Having learned of the princess's power, this being would lure her into the realm of shadows, where she would watch her world fall apart! But unbeknownst to this king of shadows, a humble yet bold plumber ventured out to conquet his evil scheme, rescue the beloved princess, and restore light to the world! Ah, that sure was epic. And now, you can relive the epic adventure for yourself in Super Mario Epic - wait a minute, who am I kidding?

Pros A nice variety of enemies with unique behaviors, and Dragon Coins add some replay value.

Cons MARIO CAN'T STOMP ENEMIES, game lacks in most Mario elements, and the general Mario feel. Oh, and it dosen't live up to its title.

Impressions
Gameplay
4 / 10
Let us get the bad part over with first: why can't Mario stomp on enemies?! It's unforgivable, I tell you! Enough with that. The object of the game is to clear each of the six levels by... reaching the other side! In your epic venture to the right side of the stage, you must... jump to avoid enemies! At least there is a good variety of those little buggers. There are jumping Ninjis, a swooping Angry Sun, and Banzai Bills which you must duck under to avoid. Your only defense is the fire flower, which there are only so many of, and is lost once you are hit or you complete the level. There are little other Mario elements to be found. Super Mario Epic is nothing more than a simple platformer where you must make it through the level while dodging enemies. Pretty epic, no?

Graphics
5 / 10
If you've played most any other Mario fangame, you know what to expect. The Mario sprite is ripped from Super Mario World, as are most other graphics. Just about the rest are from Super Mario Allstars. The level graphics are decent, up until you get to level 5. The graphics are as average as average can get.

Sound
5 / 10
Speaking of as average as average can get, the same can be said about the sounds and music. Of course, there is the SNES Mario sounds, with the voice or Super Mario 64 mixed in. The music is MIDI, of course, is mostly consisting of Mario tunes you know and love (or are tired of). The tunes are overused in multiple levels, however. And did I mention there is the occasional song by Nirvana?

Replay
6 / 10
Beat the game, and you will recieve the password to access a cheat screen, where you may modify your life total and choose a level to replay. Each level contains 5 Dragon Coins for you to hunt down, adding in a nice little bit of challenge. But the question is, did you enjoy the gameplay enough to play it again?

Final Words
5 / 10
It's a plain, old, mediocre adventure of epic proportions!
