General Commentary and Game Overview
I won't lie - What drew me into this game was "Metroidvania."

I love me a good 2-D explore-unlock-explore adventure and to be honest, I've always thought a Mario game based on this would be interesting.

Then again, Hello games aren't exactly known for being interesting. Will he prove me wrong?

You've already read the final words. Spoiler alert, he doesn't.

Pros + Metroidvania, right down to a map system.
+ The music is very nice.

Cons - The mechanics are as broken as always.
- Some mechanics just don't translate well into a Metroidvania.
- This caused me to quit the game early and start this review.
- It was clearly not built around the core concept; the Metroidvania system is tacked on.
- Abysmally unfair.

Gameplay
2 / 10
Think of any Hello game you've played and you've played this one, with a twist - this one has free-exploring. It's nice to see Hello trying something different but unfortunately, it's not really that different.

I can talk on and on about how the controls are loose, the physics are just that very little bit too weird, and how some things just seem shoehorned in, but the fact of the matter is that these work in, well, a regular old Mario game. (Well, I shouldn't say "work," but you get used to them.)

This isn't a regular old Mario game, though. This is a Metroidvania, which means several classic Mario conventions like bottomless pits and extra lives are meaningless. Guess what is in this game? Bottomless pits and extra lives.

The real problem is how much health you have. You have two points to start out with. I don't know if you can get more, but the thing is, combined with the lives system and the wonky controls, you're likely going to get a Game Over very quickly. Extra lives just do not fit in a Metroidvania. Replace the five or so lives you give us with eight extra Hit Points, Hello, and this would be less of a problem.

There's also bottomless pits, which just don't belong in a Metroidvania game at all. Instant deaths are something Metroidvanias avoid specifically because it's not conducive to exploration. The problem is amplified here by a number of blind jumps, some of which are safe, some of which aren't. It's never clear which is which, either. If you're going to have exploration, don't punish the player for experimenting and, well, EXPLORING.

One last thing. There's a part where there are blocks that are activated by switches. The switch is in another room. There is a pipe, that takes you down to a floor made entirely of these blocks. If the blocks aren't there, you die. And you have no way of knowing they're even there until it's too late.

"Challenging" does not mean "completely unfair."

The Metroidvania aspect is tacked on, not built around, and that's what ultimately destroys the game. When a game is built for other things, you really need to break it down before building it - otherwise it just feels like it's trying to be something it's not. I would love to see a Mario Metroidvania game done properly on this site, but unfortunately, this isn't that game.

Had this been just a regular Hello game, it would have been average. Being something it's clearly not and failing at it, it is among the worst of this site.

Graphics
6 / 10
The graphics are the same as always. Same as always. Super Mario Bros. 3, Black Squirrel's tileset that even HE is sick of by now, and a few graphical tricks here and there. There's a glitch with dark rooms where the place brightens up if you pause the game or other things. Why this wasn't fixed, I'll never know.

Sound
10 / 10
If anything, the music is quite good. It really does fit the scenes quite well and isn't a whole bunch of bad MIDI files, which is worth something, I suppose. Not much else to say.

Replay
1 / 10
Honestly, I don't really want to play this again. I can't imagine doing a low-level run as I don't know what levels there are - can you get more Hit Points? More item slots? In any case, it's just not worth any more time than I've given it.

Final Words
2 / 10
At first I thought Hello had finally come up with something original, only to be proven that it's the same as always, if not even worse than usual.

I have to disagree with this review, with a 10/10 for sound and 2/10 for final.

Oops, you're giving equal weight to every single aspect of the game. And continuing to make me hate numerical review systems.

I guess I should explain - if you honestly think that the music is worth as much as the gameplay, in a game that is meant to be played - the action of which is often called gameplay - then you're wrong.

Had I averaged it out it would have been a five - which in my book means average because it's the middle of the scale. This is a far below average game. It does not deserve a five. It should not get a five. I gave it a two and to be honest I was being pretty generous with that two.

When did I say that? Did you think that maybe I was disagreeing with the scores themselves and not averaging?

Why, thank you.

Actually it would have been a 4.75.

So you're telling me that this game is incapable of getting a 5? And that anyone that does is wrong? Another MFGGer rated this game a five. Sorry man, but if you're going where I think you're going with this, then that sounds really mean to me.

Since you cited Sounds as a 10 and the final score as a 2, with little to no other explanation as to WHY you disagreed, I figured that's where you were disagreeing.

If you disagreed with my review, why don't you just write a review of your own instead of posting "Well I think you're wrong" with no explanation whatsoever? Or at least explain yourself when you do disagree.

Does the site's review system do decimals? No. So it would have been a five. You seriously need to stop splitting hairs.

Also, I'm not going to personally insult someone else because they gave the game a five. Reviews are opinions in the end. I only cited five because that's what I came up with when I averaged the scores out.
