Super Mario Bros. DDX
preview
By: Guinea
The title of this game basically tells you what it is:
Good old Super Mario Bros. side scrolling action, plus a lot of new features and new graphics.

Super Mario Bros. DDX features an excellent engine teamed up with colorful graphics, all based on the classic game.

Just to name some of the new features of this game:
+ Giant Mario
+ Play with either Mario or Luigi, who have unique physics each
+ Get the retro feel with oldschool graphics, but recolored and reshaded

This is fangaming of the highest level!

This Game features 6 Worlds with different amounts of levels plus 2 Bonus worlds with Retro levels and levels made by MFGGers.
This is already version 1.2, so in case you already got this at the NCFC you should download it again for some bugfixes, listed in the Readme:
-Save Feature in World 4 does now work!
-Level Selection Problem with Levels 6-5 and 6-B now solved.
-Some improved visuals in worlds 2-B and 3-B

I still appreciate every review!

Enjoy!

Powerstars321 I love this game! With a few tweaks, I think it could be a Wiiware title. I have even higher hopes for the Midas Machine now, as one of the creators made this! 9/10! 9 / 10

Hiago I have few words: This is a insuperable game. 10 / 10
Pablo Excellent work, but if you want to make the complete versione better, you have to give to the game more classic SMB elements. If you make this inserting more new cool elements (like the Mega Mushroom), Super Mario Bros. DDX will be THE SMB FAN REMAKE. 8 / 10
Treeki An excellent remake of SMB with all-new features and everything you loved about the original. Check it out, you won't be disappointed. 10 / 10
Black Squirrel SMBDDX shows that SMB clones don't have to be exactly the same as the NES classic in order for them to work well. Definately worth the download. 8 / 10
Red9378 This is a great Mario fangame and it really copies the oringinal Super Mario Bros. 10 / 10
Lazor-d Excellent clone of Super Mario Bros that stays faithful to the original while adding nice new touches. 9 / 10

WTF?! rating in comments without writing reviews makes me angry, especially when you don't even use a 10-point rating system. especially because 99% of all in-comment reviews are badly thought out perfect scores. and why the heck did you use ninety exclamation points it just makes you look dumb.

wow i get worked up over nothing. i should really learn to shut up and talk less.

i'm having trouble with the second boss. if I could get a fire flower to the end of 2-6 I wouldn't have to worry about the dumb switches, but I only managed to get it ther once and I failed.

The only thing that I don't like in this game is that Mario (or Luigi) moves slowly and it's hard to control him. You should try to make him move like the original. You must g-work on it. All the other stuff are great.

cool, a new twist on a classic!

World 4 is super tough but not impossible.
Only thing that bugs me is the screen shot here.
It show three item boxes on the top of the screen but their not there on the game I downloaded.
Were they extra power-ups? If so it would be a great feature to add. (you know the smw item holder)

I just noticed you are right, the screenshot is out of date. It was from an early demo in which I planned to have such item boxes, but that was canned later. However I forgot to exchange the screen =)
Glad you like the game!

No. I just want to say that it is hard. I can't beat the game. I didn't say that I want you to change it "for me". I realy like this game but I believe that it would be better if you make its controling easier. I'm not the only one who believe it.

It was the evacuation theme from Metroid Fusion I think... But I'm not sure if it's from THAT Metroid.
You should find it on VGMusic.

Cutscenes have no definite formula.
You have to find the way that works best with the engine you have.
In this game, I deactivated the controls for the character (by setting a variable) and used a timeline to move him.
You have to figure that out by yourself though. Solving problems your own way is a good way to learn :)

That one is pretty hard to figure out, but some people actually did it. I admit, it's a little unfair :)

// Spoilers:
There is a vine in the bottom block of the block column between the pit and the mega mushroom.
First you need to break the block directly above the vine block with the red koopa shell on the top left.
Then you must duckjump as Super Mario into that gap and break the rest of the blocks. Finally hit the remaining block with the other red koopa shell.
// End Spoilers

This is a really fantastic game, one of the best games on MFGG! I unlocked every stage and bonus stage, but I still have that problem:
It's not a big problem, but can't enter level 5-B from the stage select screen.
It is there, but nothing happens when I select it.

Oh, I'll look into it. When I found the problem I might upload a fixed version.
Don't count on it too soon though, since this is an old game and I'm working on other stuff in the moment.
I'm glad you liked the game and bothered to unlock everything. :)

Version 1.0.228. After taking long break from coding this, I just recently started working on it again; about 2 months ago. I'm currently mainly trying to get the game to be as stable and fluent as possible. Much of the game's physics (except for Mario/Luigi's, which I will do next) and collision detections have been improved. I have added many new items, powerups, and objects. There has been so much background coding to fix glitches, bugs, and to improve the overall quality and visual appeal. I have also replaced many 8-bit sound effects with much 16-bit ones. This game is being made in VISUAL BASIC 6.0, NOT Game Maker. I am also not using any of the "visual" parts of visual basic to create this, it is being done purely hard-coded. I am also not distributing the game at this time. There is no download link provided on purpose. If something randomly happens in the video (like Mario randomly powering up or Mario randomly obtaining a vegetable or boomerang) I have a bunch of debug commands that I use for testing or demonstration purposes. They will be taken out of the final product. The Golden Super Leaf and Invincibility Tanooki Suit (For White Raccoon Mario/White Fox Luigi) which are showcased in this video will not be used in normal play. This game is for all of the classic retro Mario fans, I don't intend on making this game too easy, don't worry. I might make them an unlockable after the game is completed or something. There are 3 more main things that i need to do until I'll be able to start designing levels: 1.) I need to fix Mario/Luigi's jumping and dashing physics. Why?: To give a better overall feel with the controls. I want to make it as close to SMB3/SMW/NSMB's physics engine as possible. It will also enable me to fix and create more things such as cape Mario's ability to fly or creating bump blocks or sliding and crouching at the same time. 2.) I need to organize the code and make it more dynamic for level creation. Why?: Even though i can create new courses now if i wanted to, it wouldn't be optimized. I need to make the code more dynamic to not only make it easy to create them in the long run but also for performance boosts (To maintain a higher and more stable 60 FPS). The biggest problem with this one is i kinda of dug myself into a hole... when I first started coding this project, I had no idea what i was doing lol. So many-a-times I find myself going back and having to fix older code that isn't that optimized. 3.) I need to either update the Directx7 to Directx8 or fix the current Directx7 problems that I currently have with blitting and clippers. OR I need to just scrap Directx7 completely and upgrade my entire project to a newer Visual Basic .NET along with Directx9. But something like that is much easier said than done... I'm really not looking forward to this one... However, i think i'd rather upgrade it to Directx9 (if i can) so it has native support with Windows Vista and 7. My game can currently be tweaked to work on these operating systems but since Microsoft decided for some reason not to support Directx7 or Directx8 in them, there are more steps that need to be taken in order to run the game. I'd like to thank everyone for the support and I hope eventually, I'll be able to create an amazin' Super Mario Bros. fan game.
