General Commentary and Game Overview
Super Mega Man Bros. is a Mario-Mega Man crossover programmed in Flash. Despite being relatively innovative, the cutscenes are pretty cheesy, and the game generally feels rushed.

Pros + Uses Flash, which is an underused fangame-making medium
+ Bosses are OK
+ Engine is good
+ Adjustable controls
+ Plenty of cutscenes, which can be quickly skipped

Cons - Game crashes if you dash too long
- Excessive duplication of enemies ("enemy spamming")
- Horrible grammar and translation
- Ridiculous dialogue
- Has very little to do with Mario
- Awful resized sprites
- No music in cutscenes
- Limited sound effects
- Uses slightly-censored versions of the N-word and the F-word

Gameplay
4 / 10
Two different characters - Mario and Zero - are playable in this 2-D platform game, and you can switch between the heroes at any time. Both characters have the ability to shoot fireballs and swing a hammer or saber. The default controls are pretty awkward, but fortunately you have the option of changing them. The basic mechanics work pretty well, but the game seems to crash if you dash for too long.

Levels are made up of Koopa soldiers and some Mega Man enemies. The variety of enemies isn't very high. The levels don't feel very Mario-ish, nor do they capture the essence of Mega Man games, and much of the difficulty is derived from "enemy spamming." The bosses, however, are fairly interesting and do a halfway-decent job of capturing the Mega Man feel. I especially liked the Beer Turtle (don't ask).

You'll spend as much time watching the game's cutscenes (unless you skip them) as playing the game, and unfortunately, the cutscenes aren't exactly impressive. The dialogue is simply horrible, and Mario doesn't act or talk anything like Mario does in real Mario games. The grammar is worse than anything you'll see on the MFGG forums (which is scary), and the translation is pretty iffy. Worse, I suspect the author is taking the game seriously. The story itself is also bad. Just like the infamous Paper Mario World, the author skips what would be a sizable part of the game and replaces it with a simple text-based cutscene. This is a real cop-out and makes the game feel rushed, to put it mildly.

This is one of the more T-rated games on MFGG. A variant of the N-word is used twice early on in the game, and the F-word appears as well (with only one letter censored). I just don't think profanity has a place in a Mario game. There's a bit of blood, as well, not to mention the booze-based boss.

Graphics
3 / 10
One of the very few Flash-based fangames, some of the graphical effects are pretty nice. Some elements of the cutscenes are very sleek and smooth, and some effects - like the glowing moon in the overworld levels - look nice. However, the graphics score is hurt by frequent use of horribly-resized sprites, as well as several cases of severe graphics clashing. Mario is also missing some important animations, like when he's swimming.

Sound
3 / 10
The music in this game seems to be in MP3 format, and most of it comes from Mega Man games. The songs themselves aren't bad and generally fit the game environments. There's also a music test mode on the title screen. However, there's no music at all during the cutscenes, which is a major disappointment to me, and sound effects are limited to annoying Mario voices.

Replay
2 / 10
This isn't a particularly long game, and despite some degree of originality, the gameplay just isn't good enough to warrant much replay value. And since the "story" plays a bigger part than the actual gameplay, and since the story is ridiculous, I doubt you're going to play this game more than once.

Final Words
3 / 10
Super Mega Man Bros. reminds me a lot of Paper Mario World. The dialogue is so terrible, and the crossover-based story so cheesy, that it's actually hilarious.

Well, now that I have a more "mature" looks at things, I guess I am starting to agree that yes, my level design is indeed terrible, but I always loved boss battles. So it's good to see it's one of my fortes at least! (yeah, 7 years since I have done this I AM WRITING THIS.)

Whoa, that was quite a while ago! It's always fun to get a comment on a review I submitted in a former life.

Are you still making games? If so, I bet you could make something a lot more polished and playable now!
