General Commentary and Game Overview
Late to the punch, aren't I? I finally decided to stop lurking and give my thoughts on a game, and what better game to start with than one of the better fangames around? Coco's efforts definitely shine here; while I can't agree with her choice to merely emulate the classic Super Mario Bros., not going much further from it, it's a very nice game to enjoy, at least on its first run.

Pros * Great engine and level design
* Nice graphics
* Okay soundtrack

Cons * Unoriginal gameplay mechanics
* Probably too unforgiving for its own good

Impressions
Gameplay
8 / 10
The gameplay, while unoriginal, is very solid. The physics feel honest enough to the classic games, and the level design, while unforgiving, is some of the best I've seen in the fandom. I'd love to see more done out of this; this engine clearly has plenty of potential to be better than what it already is.

Graphics
7 / 10
The graphics, while not something I'd imagine 80s~90s' Mario would do, looks rather nice and high-quality! It's not my favorite art style in the world, but definitely something I can live with and look at as I play the game. Nice work!

Sound
8 / 10
Ahh, audio, my primary domain! The soundtrack is okay, with everything obviously trying to emulate a 16-bit feel. While intentionally sticking to outdated instrumentation isn't exactly my cup of tea, I can appreciate the choice, and for the most part, it sounds rather nice. I love the attention and effort put into it, and while the soundtrack isn't completely comprised of original compositions, they're all nice to listen to, the overworld theme especially sticking to my head.

Replay
5 / 10
Although it's a nice game to look at, listen to and play through, with its merciless difficulty and lack of originality, there isn't much compelling me to replay the game too often.

Final Words
7 / 10
While a well-made game, Super Mario Bros. The Next Level brings nothing noteworthy new to the table.
