Super Mario Bros Odyssey Ch.1 is a retelling of the very first Super Mario Bros game, with cutscenes, new sprites, original levels, unlockable skin-sets and levels, and a few characters and items from future Mario games. "Odyssey" is going to be a series of fangames base on other entries in the Super Mario Bros franchise, with some original ideas. I began the project around 2 1/2-3 years ago with the intention of it being an "all-in-one" game similar to Super Mario All-Stars. After a good while though I realized just how ambitious the idea was and that is how I got onto the route I'm on now.
This update has a few bug fixes. The bug that caused the game to crash for Windows 8 users shouldn't happen now. Also, pressing enter to save should work too instead of un-pausing :P
F1 displays the controls and be sure to extract EVERYTHING into the same folder, or else you may get errors ranging from visuals not displaying to the game just flat out not working. Hope you all enjoy the game!
This is the first chapter, in which Mario and Luigi begin their on-going adventures to save the Mushroom Kingdom from King Bowser.
Be SURE to extract ALL the files into the SAME folder, or else some audio/graphical bugs may occur.
One of the best engine-based platformers I've played. However, pausing the game often causes a castle to appear in the upper-left corner of the screen, after which the game hangs. The game also froze up after I finished 1-8.
Thanks for the feedback C: I want to apologize for these weird errors, like the ones Vinny mentioned. I just played through world 1 a second ago and I didn't get the castle glitch when pausing. the hanging afterwards, OR the freezing up after finishing W1 :c
Yeah I'm sorry about that. I haven't gotten any reports on that happening before, either.
Very good game! For us who like the classic Bros games, the engine is very accurate and to me it plays in a much nicer way than SMB3. World 4 is my favorite with the snowballs.
Still haven't figured out how to actually save and quit. When I save and close the game it doesn't actually save and I always have to start from the beginning D:

Took some time for me to figure out too: Press Shift on "Save" and it'll say "save successful" - If you pressed enter it would not work, it's a UI glitch I think.
Pressing Enter to Save would not work at all - and it is a bug with the user interface. Also, for the 10,000 coin unlock bug, it is an error in the code.
I've addressed the saving glitch and the retro mode unlocking glitch should be fixed now. I'm about to submit the updated zip folder into the site's queue and I'll be posting a new DL link on the forums. Also, Vinny brought up a glitch that only Win8 users get - sometimes the same sound playing multiple times so they overlap may cause the game to crash. I think I've found a solution to that as well.
EDIT: I can't seem to update for some reason. Every time I click update submission, it takes a few minutes, then gives me an error message saying I'm either trying to complete an already completed action or I'm trying to complete an action from off-site (lol what). So until that goes away, the new version won't be uploaded :c
Wow. I'm so reviewing this later. So far, I'm loving pretty much every aspect about it! The origin story, the amount of detail each background contains, and even the little touches implemented in various areas are just all absolutely lovely!
Also for the update part - it was a bug in the servers system, or it could be your PC. I updated my SML2 Pipes sprite sheet that fine, no error messages!

I have to say, this game is great. Level 4-3 is my favorite level.
By the way, I got stuck as Luigi in level 3-3. (I think)
It was the level with a warp pipe just past the checkpoint near a tree, with a small "pyramid" of ?-Blocks to the left. I jumped to the top of the pyramid, charged my super jump and jumped into the tree, past the invisible wall. I fell down, and was unable to get back up, even with super jumps. I had to wait for time to run out.
The new version is available. If you have trouble with the game crashing on Windows 8, or if you press enter when trying to save and it just exits the pause screen, this version fixes those buggy-dudes.
Edit: Made a last minute fix. There was a glitch that caused the game to mix retro graphics with 16-bit ones after getting a game over in retro mode. This will be the last update unless a serious game-breaking glitch occurs for several people, as I'd like to focus all my effort on my next project. Thanks for all your support! ^^
