General Commentary and Game Overview
On the cover, New Super Mario Kart looks like a wonderful remake of Super Mario Kart (SNES). Underneath the lovely picture of Petey Piranha driving on Rainbow Road, however, is a game that looks like Mariokart but doesn't play quite the same.

Pros Graphics look nice when they don't play up.
Music choices and sound choices appropriate.
3D engine works.
Unlockable characters.

Cons Far too glitchy - in both gameplay and graphics.
Some MIDIs are too loud.
Driving skill alone won't help the player get from last to first.

Impressions
Gameplay
2 / 10
I like Mariokart games, so I'd be inclined to give this a high mark. However, there are some major problems with the gameplay. Firstly, for all Bowser Castle tracks (especially 3), it's very difficult to get around without bumping into a wall and once you do hit a wall, it takes 3 seconds to get back up to speed - if you can actually move, that is. Twice I had to restart a race because I got stuck in a wall. Secondly, no matter how skilfully you drive around the track, if you do screw up at any point, you cannot catch up with the AI by pure driving skill. The player's victory rests too much on the hope that he will drive over a ? and get lightning, star power or mega mushroom (the only power-ups in the game that are useful if you're at the back).

Graphics
6 / 10
The 3D tracks were lovely to look at and nothing seemed wrong with them. Sadly, I noticed a few major graphic glitches (such as Bowser Castle 2 - all AI racers have a red aura around them)

Sound
8 / 10
While I have no objection to the use of MIDIs, I do object to the loudness of the character select music, the rainbow road music and a couple of characters' victory themes. The sound effects, however, are impeccable, so I'm awarding 8/10 in this category.

Replay
8 / 10
Unlockable characters may be a good incentive to keep playing, but once you've unlocked them all, that's it. The battle mode has no real point to it - it's just an added extra.

Final Words
5 / 10
This is the first 3D Mariokart game to appear on MFGG - it's obviously going to be deeply flawed. I hope its sequel is better.

You said you'd give me a 7/10 on sound, but you gave an 8 instead :-)

P.S. thanx for the review

You're welcome.
Thanks for pointing out my error. I'd better change that little bit (not to make you lose marks).

Unlike you, I saw past the "ZOMFG 3D MARIOKART REMAKE!!!!!1111" hype and found some things wrong with the game. You may think it's awesome, in which case you can give it an 8 or more, but I don't think this game is as good as several others on MFGG.
