General Commentary and Game Overview
Super Mario Epic 2 was one of the most anticipated fangames ever that actually reached completion, and for many, it was well worth the wait. But after the hype is gone, is it still worth playing?

Pros Tons of levels, secrets, and variety that will keep you playing until you've found everything

Cons A few bugs here and there, and of course, TGF platform movement

Impressions
Gameplay
7 / 10
Play for five minutes or up to an hour, and you will see this game is not a huge leap from the prequel. There are a few new gimmicks here and there, such as the veggie toss and the ability to stomp on enemies (which, to be brutally honest, should have been in the original game in the first place). But in spite of all attempts to make this feel authentically Mario, it is, very glaringly, a TGF game. The TGF built-in movement rears its ugly head time and time again, as well as the path movement, which is used somewhat frequently (jumping coins, moving items, and various enemies all seem to use this dated version of AI). What this means is the game doesn't play as well as it should, especially considering all the good stuff Jeff Silvers packed in here.

Graphics
9 / 10
Nice and polished. While very little of this game's graphics are homemade or edited, what there is blends amazingly well with the official Nintendo sprites and tiles. Just like its predecessor, Super Mario Epic 2 looks like a real Mario game.

Sound
6 / 10
Typical MIDIs and sound effects. Not much to say here, except that I found Mario's voice to get annoying after a while.

Replay
8 / 10
It is likely that you will play through the whole game several times, if only to collect all the Advance coins. We're just suckers for collectibles.

Final Words
7 / 10
Super Mario Epic 2 is better than its predecessors in many ways, but doesn't quite live up to my high expectations. Jeff Silvers put a lot of work into this, and one can see that just by playing. It's the few key areas that weren't worked on as much that keep this game from reaching the score it deserves.
