Oh god the overly loud miniboss completion noise might be the most painful moment in the game! That whole "miniboss" in general is amazingly out of place and... bad. Hahaha.

Thanks for writing a review Roo. It's neat to see someone give feedback on something I made sooo long ago I barely even remember the experience of making it :p

Honestly I initially found Mario + Wario to be one of the more interesting games in the package, I found the concept intriguing and found the music pretty trippy, as well as the somewhat odd presentation. Gameplay-wise though, yeah, it certainly seems to be the most frustratingly difficult of all the games. A lot of the time it's certainly more hard than fun. But maybe that's why I was attracted to it? I dunno, I kind of adore these weird little fangames that are imperfect or ridiculously hard to get through. It reminds me of old MFGG and just that mystery the games had to them. I also love seeing the earlier attempts of a developer, the ideas they tried out even if they didn't always work 100%. You just knew this one person made the game on their own, you had no idea what was beyond the level you were stuck on, and you'd rage, but get this satisfying feeling of finally progressing and seeing more of it.

Also with all that said, it's worth pointing out Mario + Wario is not at all bad on the level of those old MFGG games, it has a smooth engine and functions great - it's just that certain things make the game hard to play. I think giving Wario more of a jump could've solved some of the issues. It would also help to save at each level, so you don't always go back to the start of the game, as it's really easy to run out of lives.

But yeah overall don't feel disheartened Vitiman! The fact that you tried out an interesting idea is what matters most. Those earlier formative projects are often the most fun game making experiences.

A mini review/first impressions: So far there is so much that's like-able and solid about this game! It seems like something you should eventually release under your real name or a studio name honestly, not just a Mario-related username. I enjoy the Sonic sort of feel to the intro sequence, with these cartoony forest characters facing a cold industrial threat. And from the beginning, I'm really digging the gameplay and attention to detail. It has a great Shovel Knight-y balance between platforming (love that you can kill enemies just by jumping on them) and Metroidvania + action RPG. It feels natural and flows in a fun way. Also, the invisible walls exploding when you hit them are dope, and I love all the other little animations, like the ghosts that pop out of dead enemies. Lots of fun details, and overall that's a very good thing. :)

This is a brutal trial-and-error game with a lot of charm, fun presentation and humor. I think it'd be a lot more fun without all the cheap unforeseeable deaths akin to jumpscares. But then again, I love that you included a manual with a 9-page-long Peach fan fiction in which we learn Princess Peach is a cruel politically corrupt dictator (when it comes to cake at least). Plus, the game is meant to be evil. Also that intro level was great! I loved the comedic world-building.

(I can't beat level 1 but I wanted to write this comment as a lil' mini review, bc I was bummed no one was commenting or reviewing. We really need to get MFGG kickin again, like dayum)

23 years later and the man himself has released a sequel. MFGG has come full circle and now reality will combust

Just starting playing this for the first time and loving it. Great job on making SMB1 feel more grand and immersive. Obviously I still need to try your Heritage demo soon too - there's so many games on MFGG I'm deeply behind on, but slowly catching up!

Looking back, this review is so hilarious and well written. The game was indeed terrible hahaha, I think I was just rushing something small to be part of a minigame competition for the first time. Why flies? Why plates??

Woah, I never noticed you made a comeback and posted this Toni! Your custom sprites were super inspiring and some of my favorites back in day. :)

It's neat to see a review on this game and find that an MFGGer prevalent from the 2010's is enjoying and praising it more than the 90's era oldbies who were way more scathing, to one of their own classics no less. I remember how absurd it was that we both loved and hated the games of old even way back then - like they were the only fangames around, so we played them endlessly, but we would also just constantly talk about how crappy they were. Looking back these games are indeed actually pretty charming and creative, in the silliest way. Like, they play so badly, but you'll look back in the year 2021 and be like "wow, this person just confidently put 10 playable characters in this game with different moves, and switched the gameplay style literally every single level. Oh, and Space Ghost is here. Oh, and now Star Fox is explaining everything for some reason. Oh, now there/s blood in the game, okay."

What Q-Nova said! I made a thread about this in the General Chat forum but man, it's crazy to see you back here biebersoft. I still remember being a 7 year old in the 90's and playing your game Mario vs. New Wario Order and having no idea what was going on or who "Bubba" was. Those experiences were just absurd mysteries where you just kind of accepted what was going on and it somehow became a weird little part of your childhood, hahaha.

Aww yeahhh the Midas Machine! It'll be awesome to explore new relics from this era. I'm more familiar with 2003-2009 MFGG, I wasn't super active around the 2010's and missed out on a lot.

This is such a nice game, worth playing just for the lovely animations and polished presentation alone! I also love seeing 2D re-imaginings of 3D Mario levels so I'm excited for the full version. Good job Mors :)

Oh god I will never leave MFGG again. I can't believe I missed out on things like this.

Speaking as someone who hasn't played one of Hello's games in nearly 5 or 6 years, just looking from an outsider standpoint, I have to disagree with everyone.

Hello has definitely evolved. His engine used to be a lot more generic and sloppy. It's a much more polished engine now, and just judging from the first level, these new games of his are nowhere near as dull as the old stuff he started with. Plus, he now uses a bigger variety of unique sprites, aside from just... the same SMB3 stuff over and over again.

I mean yeah, I should probably play the whole thing before talking. Or I should go see all his fangames and decide how repetitive they are. But hell guys. Calling this a bad fangame is ridiculous. Hello may be redundant, and yes, I remember how much he used to clone his games time and time again, but... just judging this as a fangame, it's impressively smooth, beautiful, and pretty damn functional. I like it so far.

Are smooth, functional fangames a common thing nowadays? They didn't used to be. But I guess that would explain the criticism. Haha.

HUH????? who be madonna?......never mind. i download & find out for self, da.

I'm quite surprised you don't know who Madonna is. She's one of the richest women in the world and a pop legend, also in my opinion an insult to the music industry and she should, honestly, die. EDIT LOL: When I wrote this cringe-y comment back in 2008, I was a gay pre-teen who loved Madonna but was in denial of it, and was trying to be all edgy :O
