General Commentary and Game Overview
I actually played the Super Paper Bowser World tech demo before this. The impression I got from that game was that the game was boring, but I've never played Paper Mario games before, so I thought, "Maybe the full game has more to it than this. Maybe there's a compelling story or something." So I decided to give this a whirl.
And, lo and behold, the impression that I got from this game is... it's boring. Allow me to explain. You can actually play as either Bowser or Kammy Koopa, but they're almost identical; the main differences are that Bowser shoots a stream of fire which destroys pipes and blocks while Kammy shoots projectiles that only damage enemies, and that Kammy can't break bricks without being big. They both have the same core problem: they move TERRIBLY slow. Basically, the game combines slow movement and perfect projectiles that kill all enemies to create a game that's both incredibly boring and incredibly easy. But when the game actually has difficulty, the difficulty isn't fair; most of the difficulty comes from firebars in castles, which is unfair for the slow-moving Bowser and Kammy. Coupled with this is that dying is pretty annoying, mostly because it usually means you have to go through a relatively long, easy segment again. I know that this was taken from a Paper Mario minigame and I've seen videos of the minigame in question, but you can't make a full game out of a minigame like that. It doesn't work at all. The only thing good about this game is that it's clearly programmed well. No collision glitches or anything.
