Did you follow the semi-overhead scheme? The sprite at least has to show itself from a semi-overhead angle.

Even with the tutorials you'll need more practice. Once you do it a few times you'll get the hang of it and eventually become really good at it.

Pretty good (first?) attempt.

Try to use less black inside the outlines of the sprites. That will make them look a lot more like the M&L: SS sprites. But overall, this sheet has plenty of poses, you must just practice the style a bit more.
