Author Summary Score
Jackninja5 The game has a lot of potential in it and is fun to play at some stages. The graphics are also very top notch and amazing. However, the gameplay is quite flawed (but not necessarily bad) and there is no real plot which kinda does lead me to question why I am doing things in the game. It's a 5 out of 10 from me. 5 / 10
The_applesauce If you really want some Paper Mario, this might scratch that itch, but you'd be better off playing real Paper Mario. It's PM64 but worse. 5 / 10
trollol333 Paper Mario GSO is a very enjoyable game, although there is quite a few things with it, its still fun. 8 / 10
MidnaKoopa I went in expecting something short and fairly average. I ended up spending the better half of a day and quite frankly having fun. It's not technically amazing, plenty is "wrong" with it, but I had fun. 6 / 10
Double Agent Luigifan Keep working on it! I know the score may look a bit discouraging, but keep trying, what you have here is the groundwork for a really good game! 3 / 10
SEVA For the me from two or three years ago, which should be the real author of this game, this would seem like magic. But I've gained enough experience since then to see that this is almost a wasted effort. 5 / 10
SuperLeekBros Paper Mario's a tough act to follow. You did a fine job, but the small flaws make it a "fun but not awesome" experience.
I give you 7 Star Points out of 10.
7 / 10
moonrat As Lisa said: Ehh. 5 / 10
EvilYoshiToes Overall, Paper Mario: Great Star Offensive is a very well done RPG, but the lack of storyline, memorable characters, and randomized battles can make this game bland and frustrating. 7 / 10
Shikaternia Although it lacks the creativity, character development, and depth found in the official paper Mario games, The Great Star Offensive is an overall nice RPG worth playing. 7 / 10
vadim I loved it. Knowing how difficult it is to make a game like this makes me appreciate it even more. Well done!
And to those who want to play the game: play with sound on.
10 / 10
McZaky29 A fun Paper Mario fangame that you should try at least once. 7 / 10
Average Score 6.3 / 10

Total respect for this guy. He made a working battle engine with timed hits while programming from scratch. I think some people are a bit too harsh on this guy. 3/10? Seriously? This could easily be the greatest Paper Mario fan game ever made.

I can't go past the first fight. Every time I try to, the game freezes with Mario in his little victory pose, and no matter what, it doesn't do anything else. Anyone else with this issue?

This is unbelievable! It's like you were one of the Nintendo creators!
Though, it's kind of sad to hear it took 4 years... ;(

Well, it didn't actually TAKE me 4 years. ^^;
It was just 4 years between the start and end of the project. Because I developed it in chunks. Develop a bit, get bored, come back after a month, wash, rinse, repeat. In actual fact it only took me 1-2 months to make this.

It's really a pretty fun game, and I hope you're still going on with programming these kinds of things. :D

Although, yeah, the issues in overall game design are a little unavoidable. If you don't have the right stats/items/badges to take out the boss rush at the end, you have no choice but to literally restart the entire game. Or get really really really lucky. D:

(But yes, I did get through the whole game, missing only one Star Piece apparently! Fairly good time waster.)

Hey, just found it, and, it's amazing! Only the problem is it doesn't seem to save. Is this a problem on my part or just an update to game maker that made the saving not work?

Anyways, great game, however, with malfunctioning saving I can't really play it. I might try to marathon it but that doesn't seem like such a good idea.

I'm not sure, but if you haven't extracted the archive, that might be why. As far as I know, the game executable needs to be in a folder, not an archive, to save and load properly. Also, in case that put you off, the file select screen doesn't actually show if you have saves, but if you pick the same file as last time, it should load properly. You do need to hit save blocks to save, too, it's not automatic or anything.

Woah, it actually works now :D! Thanks. Also, I know from experience how making rpgs is such a pain in the butt. I'm amazed by this game, knowing how hard it is to make a good RPG.
Dunno, lol, maybe it's just the engine I'm using.
Anyway, the game is amazing. Really has that Paper Mario-y feel to it. Now if you excuse me, I have a game waiting for me to play ;)

Dude, AMAZING RPG! I can't wait to 100% this game! My only complaint is that Mario's sprite looks a little weird...

Maybe I exaggerated back then, heh...
Anyway, it's still not too bad. It's kind of unfortunate how there aren't many PM fangames (or really any now that I've searched for them) like this.

Onto the point of this comment; how exactly would I go on about opening the door in the ruins? I've tried to look for any go-through walls, breakable walls, killed all enemies in the map, talked to all Toads, went to the sewers, nothing. And yes, I know there's the secret room to the right of where the door is. Can't find anything about it in these comments, and the walkthrough videos posted over 2 years ago are now private, so that basically leaves me with this comment section.

EDIT: Wow, can't believe I found it so soon after I posted this. I was gonna have a mental breakdown! Sneaky sneaky.

Ask Shroomlock. He'll give you a hint.

Neither do I. I tried clicking it and pressing Enter but it doesn't work.
