General Commentary and Game Overview
Highway Trouble is a shooter that Saturn has been developing for a long time. It's still a demo, but it's definitely a worthwhile download.

Pros + Innovative concept
+ Nice variety of enemies and bosses
+ Plenty of weapons and moves
+ Adjustable settings

Cons - Some graphics clashing
- Desert boss is quite frustrating
- The big gray Mario bosses don't work right
- Some enemy attacks can't be avoided
- Shallow story

Impressions
Gameplay
8 / 10
Bowser's army has struck the highways of the Mushroom Kingdom, and Mario must save the day by gunning down Bowser's army of ever-multiplying clones of the Mario Bros. and Yoshi. These meanies are armed with guns, grenades, missile launchers, jet packs, and other weapons. Mario has quite a few weapons of his own, however. Not only can Mario fire a gun and toss grenades, he can double jump, shoot while falling, and even hijack cars on the road! There are also some nifty power-ups that upgrade your gun for a while, grant invincibility, or help you in other ways. Advancing in the game requires you to knock out Bowser's special weapons, like helicopters, armored cars, and even a flying saucer, all of which can withstand some pretty heavy firepower before going down.

The gameplay is generally well-done, although I have a few beefs with some aspects of it. For one thing, many bosses have attacks that are virtually impossible to avoid. Even with near-infinite lives, this is frustrating. The big gray Mario clones can be eliminated very quickly if you lure it to the edge of the screen, where it won't move and you can blast away at it. There's also a boss in the desert level that is rather unfitting - not to mention being extremely frustrating.

Graphics
8 / 10
The graphics aren't a huge deal in this game, since the action is usually moving too fast for you to notice the multiple background layers or the very impressive explosions. A lot of the graphics clash, though, but at least Mario doesn't use the standard Hello gun sprite.

Sound
8 / 10
I don't recognize any of the songs in this game, but the MP3-format music is well-done and fits with the game environments.

Sounds are also well-executed. I especially liked the thunder sounds, which, unlike almost all thunder sound effects, actually sound like thunder.

Replay
8 / 10
This game has a relatively high replay value. Two difficulty levels make a second playthrough worthwhile, and there's some degree of strategy in this game as well.

Final Words
8 / 10
Highway Trouble isn't perfect yet, but it's more polished than the majority of "finished" fangames. The only thing missing is Jean-Claude Van Damme.
