General Commentary and Game Overview

Super Mario Storm is a good, if flawed, fangame. On one hand, it evokes great memories for me, and is quite fun to play due to its varied stages. On the other hand, I feel as if the game has a lot of fake difficulty due to some questionable stage design and engine glitches.

Pros	+good variety in gameplay +great choices of music +very high replay value +wonderful nostalgia
Cons	-is more difficult than it should be due to engine glitches -some bad stage design -sketchy graphics and sound

Impressions

Gameplay 6 / 10	Above average. I've said this multiple times this review, but the game has a lot of variety going for it. However, many of the boss fights are frustrating due to the weird way that the game engine operates. On my machine, at least, the third-to-last boss was broken unless I turned the music off, since the load time would result in a necessary item not being dropped in a place I could get it. The engine bugs tend to have much less of an effect on normal levels, though, which makes said levels more enjoyable. There are a few levels which are irritating, like Dr. Mario MD's, but the majority work well enough.
Graphics 4 / 10	Competent, but below average. Though the sprites look pretty simplistic and amateurish, they are all hand-drawn, and I appreciate that. A lot of the animations are amusing, too. If nothing else, this game has a charming art style.
Sound 7 / 10	Good. I think the music chosen for the stages fit very well. What music does get picked tends to be very well done, too. The sound effects all seem to be made by someone fooling around with a microphone, which has mixed results. The sound effects work better than you'd think, but they still sound kind of cheap.
Replay 8 / 10	Great. The game only takes about fifteen to thirty minutes to beat, which works well with the entertaining stages. However, replaying the bosses can be irritating due to the aforementioned bugs. If it weren't for those bosses, I'd give this a 9.

Final Words

Above average. Though it is marred by technical shortcomings, this game is still entertaining.
