I hope you guys enjoyed our April Fools joke! If you guys were wondering why it lasted 2 days instead of 1, well, some people enjoyed it so much that we decided to extend it by a day.

But yeah there are a few things I want to talk about here.

First of all, we've made a minor change to the submission rules.

"2.4.1 - Please try to ensure that your game is at least making an attempt to be an entertaining and productive contribution to the website. Games with little gameplay, lack of effort, or games made intentionally bad for the purpose of a joke are not allowed. When a game is bad on purpose, it's usually not fun for anyone, and your attempts at comedy will most likely come off as obnoxious."

What does this mean? Well, from this point onwards, we won't accept poor quality games, even if they are meant to be joke games. If the main joke of your game is that "it's bad" then maybe you should come up with a less overdone joke anyways.

This does NOT include games that have bad art, music, or controls, but have more going on than just "this game is bad lol funny". This is only for those Waligie type of games.

As for the other thing, it came to my attention that some people have been having some difficulty submitting stuff to the main site lately.

I think I figured out why.

The thumbnail for all submissions has to be 100x100. Don't make it more, don't make it less. For some reason, the site software doesn't throw out an error for that.

It's something I'll be looking into in the near future, but for now, here's your warning.

Anyways, that's all, keep making fangames I guess. And if you're not making fangames, I dunno, start making one!

My issue here is "poor quality game" is subjective, and you need an objective system for guidelines. "lack of effort" is extremely subjective as well.

So, does that mean that joke games which are like Mario 64: Really Good Edition will no longer be accepted?

True, I don't disagree that the rule can be defined in a more objective fashion, and I also agree that it's a rather subjective rule, but the whole "no bad games" rule is also pretty subjective, and we had that for years. I mean how do you determine a game as objectively bad? You can't. Then going by that logic we shouldn't do any quality control and accept all games that work. I know a lot of people would agree with this notion but personally speaking I wouldn't want this site to gain a reputation of a dumping ground for bad games.

Perhaps the whole submission rules could get a rewrite one day since I don't think it's really all that clearly written at times, but again that's my opinion.

That game has actual effort put into itself, we are talking about completely low effort games that have no real gameplay or merit to them.
Like, there's a difference between a game like Waligie, a game like Turd Feast, and a game like Mario Remastered.

The first one is just bad, that's the joke, which worked in 2005 (or whenever the game came out), the second one is a game that has bad visuals but has actual effort put into it, and the last one is kind of in-between where there isn't a ton of effort, but the game is different enough from the rest and isn't just "yet another bad game".

If you actually put effort into your games and don't make them bad in the purpose of a joke without anything else for the game to rely on, then there's no reason for you to stop submitting games here.

Are games made in older engines (like let’s say...RPG Maker 95) still allowed? Because I don’t have any up-to-date engines but I still want to make a fangame.

If they still work on modern systems, then yes!

Another question: Are games with stupid humor and decent graphics still allowed?

This reminds me of the Hello Clone issue back in the day in which yes it was an actual problem on all sides, both the fangamers not putting enough of a spin with their games by largely sticking to vanilla assets and the site for having negative opinions on the mere fact that someone's fangame was using the Hello Engine regardless of the fact that some people actually were making their fangames having a distinct identity (MKF, early versions of All-Star Attack). All of that led to a rather arbitrary ban on submitting them to the mainsite for a brief time. What I see right now is history repeating itself, now applying to general low-quality games that may otherwise would have passed submission.

I'm sorry to say but you might as well would reject games that if they were to be submitted right now and have their overall scores below a 4/10 just bc on the merit of "poor quality games", would be grounds for rejection since anything lower than a 5/10 people would consider a game as "poor quality". If it isn't done by using the rating system, it then becomes very nebulously defined term on what constitute as "poor quality". To that, my remedy for this is let people decide for themselves if the game is worth their time to play bc we have a review and comments system in place for the community's opinion on which games are worth playing. Arbitrarily and subjectively not allowing "poor quality games" in does much more of a disservice to creators who want a fair shake on critique (which yeah there are options to go to the forums and Discord but still), provided that their game is functional. MFGG should largely be an unbiased platform that should not discriminate against a submitted game based on the kind of game going through it's QC system unless it doesn't work or violates their policy on nsfw content (bc MFGG's insistence on being a "family-friendly" site) or use of malware.

Finally as much fault as I do have with SMWC's moderation system, the major thing I give credit to them is that *anyone* would know why their submission gets rejected if it fails to pass moderation as seen here: https://www.smwcentral.net/?p=viewforum&f=4222 which is having *transparency*. MFGG does no such thing when someone's submission gets rejected with the way its QC system works which leads to speculation on why unless the creator specifically inquires about it as far as I can recall.

Of course. Even games with bad graphics are allowed. The only thing this rule prevents are games that are purposefully made horrible in every way... and that's the joke. That it's bad. Games with purposefully bad graphics can be genuinely funny with funny jokes as long as the bad graphics aren't the only thing trying to make the joke work.

The reason for this ban on low effort games is not because we want to limit people's creative freedom, it is because we don't want to look like a site where people just dump bad games.

I'll also add that the Discord is always open to members who wish to get feedback and advice on their games, and it's a great way to get quick feedback and help! If you're struggling or don't know if your game is up to par with this new standard (it likely is, the standard isn't as high as people seem to be thinking it is) then just head over there and ask!
