General Commentary and Game Overview
Mario vs. the Koopas Remix is a new sequel to Castor's 2008 classic. I was a very happy VinnyVideo to see this game pop up in the queue - this is something akin to Super Mario Epic 3 or Super Mario Stardust 2 appearing. If you want a happy Vinny, get an old MFGGer to come back and submit a game! How well has this game improved upon its predecessor? Will this be an amazing work of art, or should I just forget about this and go back to working on my annoying school team project?

Pros + Solid level design
+ Nice graphics
+ Five worlds is a good length
+ Power-ups are well-executed
+ Fun bosses
+ A decent number of new enemies
+ A fair difficulty level

Cons - Certain elements seem rushed
- Lack of replay value
- A few grammar errors

Impressions
Gameplay
8 / 10
It's a Mario platformer, and Mario does platformer-y things. It's a lot more interesting than the engine clones that dominate fangaming these days, since the author has taken the care to design an original engine with unique power-ups and new enemies. The Wind Flower was a nice addition, as were the new Hammer Bros. wielding rocket launchers. You'll see a lot of the standard Mario level environments, but you'll also enjoy a lot of twists on traditional level tropes. The bosses are all exciting and creative, and like the levels themselves, each boss was neither too easy nor unfairly difficult.

A few minor imperfections bring down the score a couple of notches. Some enemy mechanics are awkward and seem rushed. For example, the Buster Beetles toss Ice Blocks almost straight up, which makes them fairly easy to avoid, but the floatiness is seriously unrealistic even in a universe where realism is relative. The Grammar Nazi in me can't help but notice a few errors and inconsistencies in the grammar, and the ending felt rushed.

Graphics
8 / 10
The tiles and backgrounds in this game are lovely. Certain graphics are in need of additional polish, though, especially the midway flags. I noticed a few awkward animations as well. Overall, however, the graphics are impressive.

Sound
8 / 10
The background music is pretty cool. As with the original Mario vs. the Koopas, most of the songs are arrangements of VGMusic MIDIs.

Sound effects are effective, and there's a decent variety of them.

Replay
4 / 10
This is one category that disappoints. As far as I can tell, there's no real incentive to keep playing the game after you beat the final boss. Adding a hidden world, collectibles, or achievements would've been a nice addition to a well-crafted game like this one.

Final Words
8 / 10
An enjoyable sequel to one of the best games on MFGG, even if certain aspects of the game beg for just a little more polish.
