Super Mario Blue Twilight DX. It featured on G4's Attack of the Show and is considered by many as the greatest Mario fangame to date. Is this game the real deal or just hype? Lets find out!

Pros -Smooth Engine
-Intricate gameplay features, such as Wall Kicks and Triple Jumps
-Lots of Secrets to find.
-Solid Level Design

Cons -Some levels feel unpolished

-Takes a thousand years to load

Impressions
Gameplay
6 / 10
The engine is decent, and there are no major bugs in the movement that will send you into a wall or stuff up the game. However, the engine is far from perfect. Ryan Bloom said in his foreword that there are many elements of the engine he would have done differently. I can't help but to feel that he should have rebuilt the engine. Many features of the elements feel like "plug-ins", or elements added post production.

Level design is good in areas. An example of this is the "Clock Tower" level. However, there is an over-reliance on the wall kick. I could not count the number of walls back to back that I had to wall kick through to reach a higher platform. It seems as though Ryan got lazy in areas of the design.

Boss Design is excellent, challenging and well thought out. No complaints here. Giga Bowser was expecially impressive.

The hidden secrets are all good, however, I thing Bloom went a little overboard here and should have offered a few up for regular play. We didn't really need to unlock test engines and barely playable engines that only added to the massive 15mb file.

Graphics
7 / 10
Graphics are a mixed bag here. The sprites are rather clean in their 320x240 glory. It is also nice to see that Ryan used the original SMB1 sprites, in opposition to the horridly overused SMW ones.

Bosses also looked very impressive, especially Giga Bowser.

However, there are elements of the graphics that feel unpolished. Platforms and floor tiles in most levels just end suddenly, and are not rounded off like in the official games. This is especially evident in the level before Giga Bowser. Additionally, for some weird reason, when I jump on some enemies (not Goombas), they mysteriously turn into squashed blue Goombas.

Sound
9 / 10
All the sounds here are great. The sounds are all ripped from various Super Mario games, and the music is digitized and clean and very Halloween sounding.

The only reason I am not giving a 10 here is I feel Mario's talking, yips and yea sounds are horridly overused, and after a few levels, they tend to get annoying.

Replay
9 / 10
Blue Twilight DX is packed with secrets that took me quite a bit of time to unlock. I found myself coming back to this game, which is rare for most fangames. If you learn the feel of the engine and give it a chance, this game will keep you occupied for quite a few hours.

Final Words
7 / 10
Although overrated, Super Mario Blue Twilight DX is still a solid Mario fangame, and better than most stuff on MFGG. It is packed with secrets and features that will bring you back to it quite a few times. If you are looking for a fun fangame, or are looking to get hyped up for Halloween, then give Blue Twilight DX a go!
