GameCube font By: FontAddict
This is the latest in my series of Mario-related fonts. It is based on the GameCube logo - just the "GameCube" part, not the "Nintendo" stuff. I know that GAMECUBEN is already out there, but I decided it wasn't good enough. GameCube basic has a full minuscule + majuscule Latin alphabet as well as some basic symbols. All the letters were built mathematically based on stroke weight information from the original text. Most letters are optically enhanced to give the font even color, but the ones with oblique strokes may appear whiter than the square letters.

Before I begin some huge project, can you verify the font? Go to this link (http://www.fontworks.co.jp/upl...y/pdf/rodin.pdf) and make sure that's the one you want. If it is, note especially the minuscule "e" with its oblique crossbar. That is one of Rodin's most prominent points of identification. It's used on the Wii system and in tons of other games like MarioKart Wii.

Its partner, New Rodin, is also a favorite on the Wii. It's used in Wii Sports, Wii Fit, and pretty much any other "Wii" title, as well as the Mii Channel (and probably others).

Can you tell that I have a little thing for Mario fonts?

Very neat. Very crisp looking and professional. Beyond the GameCube logo, the font is also used on the Official Nintendo Player's Guides from Nintendo Power around the same time. I don't feel like cross-checking, but if you make a version2 maybe you can check out those guides (cover and I think the spine, although that might be the smaller "Nintendo" part), unless of course you've incorporated that material already (it wasn't mentioned, so I don't know).

Speaking of the "Nintendo" part, I'll be keeping GameCuben around just for that. I like your "GameCube" part better.

Once again, your knowledge of sources is far greater than mine. I haven't found any images from said player's guides that look anything like it, but I did find the "Player's Choice" logo on a couple of games. It is likely the same font.

I've got between 15-20 of them. I liked looking at the pictures in them when I was younger.

I can cross-check for accuracy if you like, and let you know.

Okay. Quick impressions:

A (there is an alternate, "non-GCN" version used)
B (should be "smooth and round" not "square")
D (should be "smooth and round" not "square", like GameCuben)
G (serifed top... therefor not the GCN font? like your lowercase r)
Q (the "stick" is directly in the middle, but still slanted, and the top of it can be seen maybe just under a corner of the way up)
R (bottom right "leg" should be slanted, take it from the X, like GameCuben)
S (serifed, like your lowercase r)

3 (serifed except on the middle arm, like your lowercase r)
4 (is a closed top)

Can you get me images of the A, B, D, Q, R, and 4?

As for the part about it not being the same font, well... it's hard to say. My guess is that some of the letters in the GameCube and Advance logos are custom, probably based on the other font. Said font resembles Bank Gothic, but it likely isn't. I suppose that it's like much of the other stuff we see in Nintendo - it looks close to common commercial fonts we know but never quite matches.

I suspect that many Japanese fonts' Latin alphabets mimic American/European ones. For example: in the MKDD logo, "DoubleDash" looks like Ragtime (search ragtime on MyFonts) but is more steeply obliqued than the italic version. This suggests that it may have been obliqued by a computer application, a characteristic of Japanese fonts since the Japanese writing systems don't support italics. So there might be some Japanese font whose Latin letters look like Ragtime's. Or maybe I'm delusional. Anyway, there are other examples. They say that Wii is a rounded version of Avenir. I don't know myself - I don't have the font to compare. The font in Wii Sports/Wii Fit looks like Eurostile, but it's not. It's New Rodin by FontWorks. (http://www.fontworks.co.jp/upl...df/newrodin.pdf) GameCube looks like Bank Gothic, though it clearly isn't. It's very confusing.

That said, thanks for your help with my fonts. I appreciate the "accountability."
